exporting second hand car from Switzerland to France

Would be great if anyone can explain to me the actual process of bringing a Swiss registered car to France where we have a house. Meaning shall we go to the Prefecture where we have the house in France and take it from there and thereafter hand back the Swiss plates, etc.....We have already kind of given up on bringing it with us to Florence where our next posting is. Seems as registering it in France is simply easier under the circumstances. The car has Diplomatic plates that must be given back before 31 Dec. Also how to go about to preferably NOT having to pay duty on the car its, ten years old and we've had it for 3.5 years. It is probably worth around 9000 SFR. Any help to help us find a way through this maze would be incredibly helpful.
