gifts in the work context

A VP at my company (midsized American firm) would like to give belated holiday gifts to some employees here in Geneva.  The VP sits in New York.  The employees here aren't his direct reports, but rather one level down.

Any ideas on what sort of present would be appropriate?  Or would this type of gift giving be considered insappropriate?

I think the idea is to spend about CHF30 each; sort of a token gift.

The VP will be delivering in Geneva gifts valued ca. CHF 30.- (thirty) to each employee he chose. For this amount, there would be no tax issue.

As to decide what is appropriate one should know it would be smart to make it as much as possible same item to men and women, like a stylish ball point pen or even a  protective rubber cover for the Apple phone. Inappropriate? On first reaction probably if this will breach or offend one or several employees' origin, culture, race when not selecting carefully the token gift...Such gift is one-time present and needs to be given with this message to avoid misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

RTS had a short documentary type episode about Xmas gifting. In general it is deemed acceptable if it is something the person receiving it could afford to give it themselves. ( week trips to some island are not acceptable haha!) 30sfr seems like a perfect amount. In my experience we usually get bottles of wine, panetones ( very popular this year!), or mugs, pens, shirts etc with company logo. I always love getting stuff with the company logo!

30.- seems a bit of a small amount per employee? (just personal thought ^^)

2 years ago, we each had a leather Montblanc passport holder, I still appreciate using it.
