Dear all,

I am looking for recommendations on companies dealing with home security - alarm - surveillance in Geneva and wonder if I could benefit from your experience. Many thanks in advance.

Best regards,

If you are in a building, I would suggest that step one, you have a protection put over the door lock so they can't get a grip on the cylinder. These are available everywhere.

Step two is to have installed a lock/bar combination that goes across the door and is much more solid. They would have to smash the door down. Remember, they are looking for the easiest hits. They don't want to make noise and don't want to waste time.

Here are a couple of links so you can see what I mean.

I wouldn't suggest that you waste your time on an alarm system.

Hi,

Sorry for having taken so long for the feedback. I did try to call the company recommended by Alfawolf7, it was an answerphone and they never called back... I guess you have already got the door fixed now, if you are still interested in an alarm system, my regie and insurance company each gave a recommendation, namely Protectas and Securitas, then you need to compare the offers etc...

A friend of mine got burgled recently and has had the bar put on the door, but it cost huge amounts of money. (I am talking 600chf sort of thing!).

The cheapest route I have found DIY home alarm stuff sold by Argos in the UK. Eg:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7001655/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CGarden+and+DIY%7C12107492/c_2/2%7Ccat_12107492%7CSecurity%7C12107601/c_3/3%7Ccat_12107601%7CHome+safety+and+alarms%7C12107602.htm

It's a matter of balancing cost and effect. Do you want to:

1. stop them getting in? (bars on doors etc)
2. deter them from breaking in? (security stickers/alarm systems/back to base alarms)
3. record them getting in? (ie. cameras)

Securitas and Protectas will probably run you into thousands just for the install and a big chunk more yearly for their monitoring.  Most likely they would never get to you house in time to do more than shut the door.  Plus there are fines for false alarms responded to.  You could just get a simple motion alarm which will call you if it goes off.  http://www.felbo.ch/de/products/21367

Pair that with an IP camera (if you have always-on internet) which can send images to a web site (so when they steal your computer and the camera the images are somewhere else) and you can then look at your house from any computer.  http://www.internet.ch/en/811277_Wireless_Internet_Camera.html

But really, good locks are the best investment.   A rottweiler would be even better.

All you need to achieve is to hold off the culprit from breaking-in for a limited amount of time.

They won't spend longer than five minutes on your door, most will stop after three.

So, the bar on the inside of your door is a good start - esp. as it's visible from the outside.

Psychology is not to be underestimated ;-)

The price of a bar (or bolt-lock, as the vendor calls it):

http://www.abus.de/us/main.asp?ScreenLang=us&sid=269603908172649290120092127111770&select=0101b09&artikel=4003318055447

about 300 € at ebay.de.

I'd calculate one or two hours of work to fit it and you're well beyond the 600 CHF mentioned - maybe they had a cheaper model...

Of course, when you have a bar on the inside of the front-door, you must also protect the balcony/back-side. Maybe not if you live 2nd floor and above, but still.

The German wikipedia article for doors (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tür#Einbruchhemmende_T.C3.BCr) mentions that there is now a European standard, putting the door in various resistance classes (the "WK numbers in the chart).

If I was in a position to buy a new door, I probably would go for "WK4", but maybe I can only afford WK3 anyway. Anything beyond WK4 is most likely _very_ expensive. Of the "if-you-have-to-ask-it's-too-expensive-for-you-anyway"-type ;-)

Audible alerts just annoy the neighbors - there's no practical value unless you have very good neighbors who care about what's going on in the neighborhood, know your alarm-system, know when it's a false-positive and call the policy accordingly. But then, you might not need an alarm system anyway...
