Detailed instructions can be found on the iPhone Dev Team blog, for someone who's not sure exactly how to go about it this is probably the safest way. I run a US iPhone 3GS with ultrasn0w and it's been working fine since June.

Use Remote unlocking method to unlock your iPhone 3g . You can get it from any of the online vendors like Superunlockcodes.com to unlock it .

I unlocked my US iPhone 4 at "King of GSM" in Rue de Lausanne. one year ago. They charged something like 70 CHF, and since then it works without issues.
