I've heard that for those who do not want to put up 3 months rent as guarantee, certain firms offer a guarantee service. Can anyone suggest a few names?

I agree with Acquarius.
Swiss Caution is the one firm that is recognized/approved by almost all of the apt. rental companies (which of course have to agree to the guarantee rather than the three months rent in a blocked account).
