What kind of camera do you have?

Maybe I can help explain some of it's functions.

its a canon 350d , the worrying aspect of all this is i actually attended classes to understand.. aperture, shutter speed and all that...... and i just-got totally lost, i enjoy the idea of manually doing things , is it just a question of trial and error?

That's a pretty spiffy camera. Especially for someone who doesn't know how to use it. :P

Everything I know about photography was through exactly that, "trial and error". At the very least, an understanding of the basic settings is essential. Are you wanting to get really creative with your images or do you just simply want great shots?

I'm trying to think of the most important things but there are just so many!

You have a great camera that will give you fantastic point and shoot photographs on Auto, but with so many additional features it would be a shame not to explore the settings as it also has the ability to give you incredible images.

I would say though, the most important thing, initially, is getting that great shot. Having an eye for it, if you will. My father, for example, has a nice camera but he doesn't have the foggiest idea how to frame a shot, to see beyond the obvious, to instill emotion to his images.

If you have this already, play with the settings (jot them down on the spot because it's easy to forget!) see what you like, what doesn't work etc..And always, ALWAYS look back.

hey thx for the feed back i like the note it down idea...

im pretty good at getting the shots off and even get some good uns , but its as you say i always forget to remember the setting ..was doing fine on auto pilot until i realized there were other options, and thats when temptation and lack of know how screwed up my beginners luck:)

so i guess not pad pencil and keep looking back.

thank you:)

maybe you can have a look on this website : www.photosig.com . people posts photos, comments, explain some technical things and have some discussion about the artistic side too. i read more than i post there (my only photo : http://www.photosig.com/go/photos/view?id=2203415), but it's helpfull to me. it also helped me to choose my lenses.
