paying fines in geneva.
Hi so last week i recieved an amande, or fine for going through a red light on the roundabout of plainpalais on my bike. I did this 28th feb 2008 and it has taken the police 8 months to send me the fine.

I have been told by a friend that there is a clause in the payment of fines that says if the police fail to send it to you within six months you can appeal it, i would just like to know if anyone else knows anything about this?

150chf for going through a red light, on a bike, on a quiet evening with no traffic around is more or less ridiculous - however - illegal. I would of prefered a 'slap on the wrist'

thanks.

If they could positively identify you, you'll have to pay for sure. I there is any doubt, then you can argue. Did they stop you? Did they check your ID? I guess so, otherwise I don't see how they could have tracked you down. If paying is a problem, I would give them a call see if they would accept an arrangement. The number should be on the letter.

A few answers from a legal point of view:

Time limitation for the police to notify you the fine is 3 years, so they're still on time...

You normally have 30 days to pay (it should be stated on the fine you got!). If you don't pay, it will automatically convert in a normal judiciairy procedure, with added costs, the possibility for you to contest the fine, and a real mini trial. But be aware that what the judge will probably do, is ask the police agent who fined you to come and recognize you formally. And a judge realizing you're lying to him is never a happy judge...

The easiest is either to write or go in person to the Geneva police (whatever the address mentionned on the fine says) and ask for the possibility to pay in installments, this shouldn't be a problem.

As for the amount, i guess they fined you for something else than just the red light, as that should only cost 60.-.

Hope this helps, but most importantly read all the fine prints on the fine, all this should be stated on it.
