Hi Everybody,
Have had it suggested to me, and am wondering whether, to put up my photos on an online storage site or gallery. Never done this before. I know nothing about them at all. I’ve heard only the name flickr as yet but have not wanted to go into the ‘whys and wherefores’ there yet until I’ve learned a bit more in adance.
Would it be it possible for some of you to recommend some to me. Especially with regards to ease of setting up and usage.. .I am unfortunately rather computer illiterate and easily confused with new things till I get used to them, and have not anyone that I know who is knowledgeable to help me with this .
If some could be recommended by anybody for me as being reliable I’d really appreciate it.
Afraid for the moment it would have to be preferably free or at the most extremely reasonable, but all info on the subject would be welcome, to try to make an informed choice.
I am a bit worried about the security aspect also.
Thank you in advance for any help available.

The usual reason for online storage is to either share with friends or use the printing facilities available with these services, therefore almost all are free with unlimited space as they'd like you to use their services. If you want it purely for backup then I'd use an external hard drive as you can get 1Tb for under 200sfr more than enough for photos or videos.
But with regards to the various photo sites I have used several purely for different reasons, I've used flickr as I had friends with the same tool, I also use Photobox as they were ideal for producing photo gifts , I have a Gmail account (Google) which also has the option to create albums.. All are fairly straight forward and just require you to follow instructions, you'll probably need to download a tool (program) that will reside on your PC to simplify the upload process, this tool can also be used to view or arrange your pictures on your PC.. I have no particular preference and with all these sites you can change to another if you are no satisfied.

Thanks lots for your reply britabroad, and sorry about the delay in replying back I'll look into the all the ones you have suggested. Have external hard drive for personal back-up already, was asking mostly regarding setting up a gallery and for linking my photos to other websites until the time when hopefully it might be worth setting up my own site..
Greatly appreciate your help!

Flickr has certain restrictions (or had, in the past) in what a non-paying member can do.
I don't know about Google (Picasa) or other services.

The German wikipedia has a list:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flickr#Datenschutz_und_Zugriffsbeschr.C3.A4nkungen
The trouble is, I can't find that list on the en.wikipedia.org pages. I don't use flickr (I maintain my own dedicated server).
I was hoping somebody actually using flickr would be able to comment on the limits for non-paying members....
...
Ah, here it is: http://www.flickr.com/help/limits/
Hope that helps.

Hi
Another free site which is easy, you can have a look at webshots.com. The free version limits the number of pictures you can upload, but I think its around the 5000 mark. I used it before I got my own host and website, and never had any problems with it.

I use Google Picasa web albums and love it. If you run out of space . . . you can just open another google account! :)
It also works well with iphoto and the uploading is a breeze. You do have to install the iphoto plugin though.
HTH!
