renting furniture

Are there any no-fuss places to rent furniture in Geneva for say 6-12 months, where one can go and pick, or look at an online catalog to select, etc? So far I've skimmed a few websites that were dismally organized and showed no prices. Any experiences?

Cheers,

Milos

old thread but I am interested if you had found any good furniture rental options.

Had anybody else here used this type of service?

I agree there seem to be a market niche and I was wonderring how many people would consider renting insted of buying. What would your main motivation be?

any comments on 'furniture rental" needs would be precious

thanks

in Geneva, you have DECORENT SA in rue du Valais 18

in Lausanne, there is MYOTAKU sa at 0800 809 800 and it could be less expensive when you decide to rent long term 12 months. They can deliver to Geneva no sweat!

Hello,

I think buying furniture is much better than renting here. You could easily get furniture for reasonable price in IKEA or Conforama. I had tried renting just cot, bed and a few pillows for 1.5 months and I was quoted a little more than CHF 1000, including insurance (may be I approached an expensive company).

I would suggest you either visit IKEA or Conforama website or even consider checking the furniture which is available on the classifields of glocals website, many of the stuff on glocals classifields is quite inexpensive.

Good luck

Decorent yes and you can also see by yourself when browsing around in their storage house that they keep all styles of furniture  and in good condition.Regarding fees you need to discuss with their management. Depending your needs and your space to be furnished you might prefer renting a few and purchasing a few on Glocals classifieds ( 2nd hand) for instance which, through your skilled negotiation, should be delivered by seller ;-)

I agree with alfi: the classifieds are full of people giving away their things (because they are moving to other country and have no idea what to do with all furniture), or selling by close to nothing. I was in this situation 3 times already, gave away twice, sold cheap a third. Use glocals, or a quick google search will also reveal lots of sites for giving things away in geneva. Good luck!

sure, you can find some good bargains but it still takes hours to go through classifieds and you may not find what you need when you need it. And there is still a question of transport and installation - my experience is that it's offen more expensive then the price paid for a second hand item.

and then, when you leave you spend time again trying to sell the furniture or give it away so making a loss

Don't you think that renting would be an option assuming the price would be competitive with the solutions mentionned above ?

Since I originally posted the thread I've come to discover that in principle it is true that furniture can be had for cheap, as people do leave the city all the time. The prerequisite for taking advantage of this is having 1) time 2) own transport 3) patience to hunt down the furniture you want piece by piece. For many people it all ends up being too much of a bother - they go over to IKEA and _done_; others run into arrangements where they seemingly get off for little money buying used items from someone leaving, only to replace much of the stuff bought within a few months for reasons of aesthetics, usability, durability, etc. A question mark over cost-effectiveness there, when all is summed up. Added complexity if you know you'll be staying in GVA just for a couple of years.

In view of this, I do think there's a "niche" here for a serious business that would offer turn-key furniture rental, good quality / reasonable price. Most of those that I've managed to track down, and which had a b2c model, were not-that-great (price, service, range...). The furniture on offer would have to be of quality, so as to differentiate the service and hold value over time (= no IKEA/Conforama). This may or may not imply a considerable up-front investment.

It seems logical to me that to make a real business out of it one would ultimately need to work directly with those in control of empty apartments (e.g. régies, businesses), switching over time to a b2b model. There you enter a who-you-know sort of a business, given GVA's feudal real estate market. I'd be surprised if a few such b2b operations didn't already exist, I'm just not likely to be privy to them.

Fully agree Joanna and with a very large assortment Decorent 0227340310 would supply just what's needed. If you have a blueprint take a copy along and list what you have in mind to fit the various spots of your flat. Glancing around and getting a quote will be the easiest.

I was just cleaning out some old files and brochures and found one for www.in-lease.com who say they cover Switzerland, but I had a look and no prices are mentioned.

I agree with the advice to shop around the classifieds and ikea/conforama etc though, unless you want something more high-end for a limited period.
