satellite dish questions
Hi there,

I know nothing about satellite dishes and would like to ask for help and advice. I'd like to have a few English speaking and movie channels and I was wondering if a satellite dish will be a good solution. I heard about SKY but it seems quite expensive.

So how does it work? Do I just buy a dish and get it installed? I'm renting a flat in an apartment building. Do I have to ask anyone for permission first? How much are satellite dishes and is there one anyone would recommend? I saw one for 100 francs in Conforama. Would it be good enough? Once I get it installed, do I need to pay any additional fees etc?

Thanks a lot for all the input!!!

Firstly, Swiss law allows anyone to place a satellite dish on their balcony, regardless of what anyone says ( be it the owner, agency, cable company etc) in 1987 there was a swiss court decision!

Technically you have many possibilities and all kinds of prices......if you are not sure, it's best to ask an experienced and trustworthy technician. I have installed on my balcony, 1 dish with 4 "heads" which allows me to get about 20 free english speaking channels ( bbc 1,2,3,4, ITV 1,2,3, CNN, Sky News, BBC 24hrs, and 3 or 4 movie channels in english, all for free) also High Definition BBC, Swiss TV, and some others.)

You will need 1 sat. dish antenna, 1 or 2 "heads" , 1 Disecq switch, Digital sat tuner ( Hi-Def ? with or without recording function?) cable and flat cable to go under the window, and connectors. A south facing balcony with a clear view of the horizon ( can you see the sun at midday? ).

Depending on all these variables you could figure on a one time cost of 1500-2000 sfr. and no monthly charges.

hope this helps

Thank you very much for both responses.

Epicure thank you again:-) I followed your previous advice related to teaching and it was useful:-)

1500-2000 francs is quite a lot. I thought it may be maximum 300 or so.

Thank you!
