which car to buy (for a first one)

Hello, I am passing my driving license, I passed the theory, and i drove about 50 hours with instructors, to make it easier i would like to buy a car, but i have no clue which one, I only know i don't want a long car, nor high (4x4).

I would buy a second hand car, so if anyone have advice/ comments i take it.. Thank you.

Hmmm, a rather general question which is difficult to answer without knowing what you need/want and what is your budget. Also please note that there have previously been lots of threads about secondhand cars.

You can get a good deal in almost any price range if you spend the time looking, especially further away from Geneva.

Also make sure you have a place to park it. Going around in circles to find a parking spot late at night its not fun!

If you will be living in the city, then buying a smaller car (e.g. Toyota Yaris or VW Polo, Renault Clio, Opel) is much better as its easier to find parking spaces and it consumes less fuel. And their insurances are also on the lower end.

The other advantage of such city car's is that the retain their re-sale value and there is always demand for it. So whenever you want to upgrade, then you could easily sell such a car to a new buyer.

Whatcar.com is one of the go-to places for information to check out the story on that nice car on AutoScout.ch.

Reliability surveys, with maintenance cost estimates are very handy, too.

It doesnt matter how it looks, you have a lack of experience in driving. It should be of a value that you can miss and quite easily replaced if needed.

Go for a medium/small sized car that will give you the feeling you control it. Go test a few. The models hyeomer adviced are good ones.

Thank you to all,Wink Thomas you're absolutely right !!and good point to test few

The issue (in Switzerlad at least)  if i pass my driving licence with automatic i would not be able to drive manual.. so i prefer to chose a manual to have good practice Undecided

You are right in choosing manual - it's by far the most fun, unless you have the more expensive F1 paddleshifts :)

- but for choosing your first car insurance, consider that insurance will be very expensive for the first two or three years.

I'd check the reliability survey and go with a reasonable used car, 5-10 years old and then upgrade later. Bring a mech friend, when buying.

If you're living in town and don't need a car every day, consider using a car-sharing scheme instead of buying:

... a small cabrio second hand, about 15 years old  and with a small engine. The insurance will be not so expensive comparing with a no cabrio and then you will be your very first sunshine ride in life. After that you will buy another car, and another... and one day, some years afterwards you will see yourself in a luxury company car, or in practical, economical functional, pretty but cold and blue monoespace leaving the parking somewhere  and you will find yourself asking about what happened to your old first little cabrio. You will miss the memories in and the experiences around and then you will realise how lucky you were to live that first moment. A car, like a first love, is about purity and hopes. Dont limit your ride and love it. Innocent

and remember a manual second hand is cheaper to fix than an automatic.

Unless you have lots of money to spend, I recommend a 2nd-hand car. New cars lose 30% of their value in the first year and are a terrible waste of money. Switzerland has a great 2nd-hand market so you can get good cars for good prices. Aim for something like 2-3 years old and 20000-50000 km on the counter, and you can keep it for another 2-3 years without spending much on maintenance and repair. Also, since it's your first car you may get a few scrapes on it, and with 2nd-hand cars that doesn't mean a big loss of value (compared with new ones)

I think you first have to make a choice between 3 categories of cars:

a. Small hatchbacks, e.g. Toyota Yaris, VW Polo, Opel Corsa. Very decent and convenient in the city

b. Larger hatchbacks, e.g. VW Golf, Opel Astra. A bit larger and therefore more comfortable when driving larger distances, and a bit more luggage space.

c. Fun 'premium' cars, e.g. Mini, Fiat 500. More expensive and you may lose some comfort and space, but you gain in style and (possibly) driving pleasure.

The easiest way to figure out what you want is to just visit a few large 2nd-hand dealers, walk around, comparing prices and narrowing down your choices.

Congratulations on your exam. Your first car will likely take quite a  bit of abuse, both on the outside (paint, body) and on the inside since your shifting etc will not be top notch at first. So if you're not too choosy meaning brand and color are not that important you can land good deals and then upgrade in 1-2 years when you are more skilled.

Style of the body is a matter of personal preference but you do need to determine how important the space is for you ie will you be taking it on ski trips or holidays? Tiny city cars are cute but you can't put s*** in them.

Lastly based on the fact that you want a manual transmission I would recommend a gasoline engine since they are much more fun to drive in manual than diesels. A Japanese like the Honda Civic or Mazda 3 might be the perfect solution for you. Things to look for: only 1 previous owner, previous owner non smoking, maintenance log is up to date, has passed the mandatory Swiss inspection recently.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Firas, you can import a car here, but I think it's taking an unnecessary risk, even though the price difference may be tempting. Basically you will have to get the car registered and inspected, and anything they don't like will have to be changed/repaired. (If the car is recent, its technical spec should be OK as the car will be homologated here, but you're still gambling on its condition). If you buy a Swiss registered recently-inspected car you don't have this problem. You may well also have to pay duty.

Hi Juli,

It depends on your budget... Here are my suggestions (most of which have already been mentionned in the previous posts)

Used car, ~2 years old, 25'000 km, small, 1.6-2 l engine, low consumption, 4-5 doors, manual, cabrio is fun but then with a hard top, air con, 4 extra rims with winter tires in good shape, recently inspected (expertise du jour). Check the tires before you buy  as changing the four of them may have a significant impact on the final price (good deals - if not the best ones - at Pneus Claude). Going through a garage is a bit more expansive, but should be safer especially if they are an approved dealer. The brand is a matter of taste, but you may want to to check the test page of the TCS.

Do you really have to ask... because they are a nighmare to drive whenever it is wet, icy or snowy which is prety much 6 months a year in Switzerland. Plus you need to carry 4 snow chains. Source: having owned 2 RWD cars in Switzerland and finally giving it up for that reason.

Right, the weight of the engine doesn't do anything for road grip in an RWD, but recent, good winter tires and sensible driving, should go a long way. So far, I haven't had any troubles in wet conditions.. we'll see about snow and ice.

if you want a BMW go for the X drive... they are not fully 4wd but in snow offer more control than the rwd versions.

Otherwise FWD cars such as a mini are pretty cool and quite fast.

For a first car it's OK. A 1 litre Corsa can do over 150 km/h. Swiss insurance and road tax are based on engine size so this will help keep the costs down.

if you want a BMW go for the X drive... they are not fully 4wd but in snow offer more control than the rwd versions.

Otherwise FWD cars such as a mini are pretty cool and quite fast.

Actually it is not, it is based on engine output (power) which may or may not be proportional with engine size (e.g. turbo engines). Dude seriously, it's like the third wrong information that you givein this thread, somehow I doubt cars are your strenght.

Nicolas

A 1st car doesnt need to be a small low power output car... it needs to be one that the driver can get used to quickly, and in which she feels safe, which does what she wants when she wants it to.

Enjoying driving helps improve ones driving... having a shitty little car may not achieve this.

Putting around in a 1 ltr ultra cheap car is not necessarily the answer...it may be, but it also may not be.

Some of the better cars are infact MUCH easier to drive than the super cheap ones... and it may be better to go for a car similar to one that she had lessons in... ( i havent read the whole thread so dont know if this fact was stated)...

anyway its just my thoughts... when I put my daughter in her first car, I will be looking at safety and ease of drive/parking  first... and also it needs to be one that she will be happy to drive and take care of... being miserable in a car doesnt encourage driving...and hence doesnt encourage improvement.

It's a mistake to think cars with small engines  are more economical. For sure if you are driving on a test track and never go over 2500 rpm and spend 30 minutes getting up to 60 kph, they might be, but not in the real world. I go to the UK a lot and hire cars a lot and in real everyday driving the best consumption i ever got was from a Passat Wagon.

Also it might be an idea to look on this site and the classified on World Radio Switzerland. There are a lot of people, diplomats etc, who have to leave here in a hurry so there are some good bargains to be had on there. ( Far better than dealing with  some used car salesman at a swiss garage who doesn't understand the concept of doing a deal) If you find a car that you like ,get a test on it's condition from Touring Club Suisse( not expensive) , then you can feel confident that you are not buying a Lemon.

One option to be sure to look out for, because virtually all Swiss cars don't seem to have them, are indicators.

Congrats on your test! I guess your choice of car-type depends on what you want to do with it.

Do you only want to drive around the city by yourself or with one more person, never load up more than a couple of weeks' shopping & want to spend far-less time going in circles? 1L car a 3-door or even SMART...you can always rent a better car to do everything else.

If you'd like to have the option of driving around Europe, go camping, drive friends and family to places, drive up to the mountains every once in a while... Go with Free, catalin or hyeomer's choices.

Do you think you'll spend over 20 hours driving per week? Consider a sedan. Diesel preferably...CRDi engine or later...beware...usually people clock more km on these cars.

Do you plan to participate in underground drag races? DONT!

Do you want to drive at 210 kmph, crash & still believe you'll walk out alive and without a scratch every time? You have to be Ayrton Senna da Silva reincarnated...but why would you recommend BMW?

PS: Don't listen to me. I still don't have a license as the dictators left in the continent have all become driving instructors in France. Undecided

Laila D: Ah no...of course you can recommend a BMW, they are great machines! I'd only be amazed to see Ayrton Senna recommending one as he was never known to be associated with one. :) I sure hope you never have an accident again, but if I were you...I would primarily thank luck, life and good fortune & then BMW for surviving one at 210 kmph.

Because "they" have at least one other car that is not RWD. I don't see any of those that you mentionned up in the mountains unless it's perfectly dry. When I do see them, they are stuck on the side of the road.

Many years ago I went on a snow/ice driving course in sweden. In case you did not know before the advent of 4 wheel drive, all swedish cars( Saabs and Volvos) had front wheel drive. I found out why on this course. Because the engine weight is over the drive wheels, the traction in slippery conditions is much better. I seem to remember that I could drive round the course twice as quickly in an old volvo than in a BMW M series.

I'm not saying that rear wheel drive cars are not good...it's just on the odd occasion  in the snow and ice they are not the best.

I agree also with the above poster. I have had a succesion of diesel golfs and had no worries with them at all.....

- budget

- will you be using it to drive far or only in town

- do you have parking for it or not

Men do not like cars; women do. But as they do not dare to admit it, they look for a men who's got one.

It follows that men pretend to like cars because they like women who like men who have nice cars. Easy.
