Murder at Gare Cornavin

(March 31, 2011) A 23-year-old man was arrested yesterday near Thônex (GE) for the murder of a 25-year old Algerian who was stabbed the previous evening in Geneve. The victim was found near Gare Cornavin and died of his wounds at the hospital. The presumed murderer has admitted the facts. He claims to be Libyan but is certainly Algerian.

The Geneva Police outlined that the victim was found a little after 23:00 near the round point of the train station. The man was treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital. He died from his wounds later that night. Initial information gathered by on-site investigators established that an altercation must have started at the tram stop. This fact was corroborated by witnesses.

On Wednesday, in the middle of the afternoon, the accused was spotted and arrested in the Thônex area. He was taken to police station accompanied by a person who apparently witnessed the crime and who disposed of the weapon with which the victim had tried to defend himself.

Initial reaction was ..."Jeez this towns getting dangerous"

THEN I had a smoke, and thought about it and probably its worth also mentioning:

a) A murder occurs EVERY day in other modern western countries, and stabbings certainly, so put it in perspective.... its bad , but it could be whole lot worse. Often in places like the UK, stabbings only make the local press, not National.

b) The police arrested the guy less than 24 hrs later... wow thats very quick detective work, hats off to them.

c) Most crime of this nature is between people who know each other, or deal with each other, and if you are careful , vigilant, and dont get into fights then there is a much much lower chance that it will ever cross your path. Reading about it, is preferable to witnessing it, or being the victim, so take care and there is no need to be scared, just be "aware".

Have a good one all.

I agree . I was simply posting for those who don't or can't read the local rags. I've noticed that police have increased their presence in this area. There is also a police locale very nearby....

Epi...sorry I disagree, its less than that...where did you get your stats from?

The 2010 Police statistics report (in German) shows:

A total number of violent crimes ending in death as being 240 for 2010.

Of which 225 were committed by males, and of that only (it seems) 81 people who were caught had right of residency here.

The clear up rate (ie crime solve rate) is 91% for crimes where death is involved.

Knifes accounted for some 118 of theses crimes (weapon) and on equal footing at 40 each were guns and blunt instruments.

Full report here in German is anyone is interested.
