Thanks so much for your reply. Actually my brand new i phone is sitting in the box and I haven't even attempted to try and use it, as I am rather computer illiterate! If you live in the Lausanne area I would so appreciate it if we could meet at a convenient place and perhaps you could show me the basics.

I found the best way is turn it on and have a fiddle with it,it is quite easy when you get used to it.The text pad takes some getting used to...but again just play around with it.
I am with Swisscom,they seem to be ok.I only seem to loose reception around Manor!!Maybe it is a sign not to go in and spend money!
