Neighborhoods in and around Lausanne

I'm in the process of searching for an apartment and was advised to look beyond Lausanne. I was told that Lausanne is "basically all residential except for the city center". Is this true?

I'm from San Francisco and even though I lived 30 minutes from downtown, I never felt like I had to go there because everything I needed (cafes, shops, bars, bookstores, friendly folks) could be found on the main road in my neighborhood.

Is Lausanne divided into neighborhoods with "mini city centers" like this?  Would Pully or Lutry be equally convenient and friendly places to live? (I don't drive, btw.)

Thanks for any advice!

yes karin, lausanne has many neighborhoods with mini-centers. from lakeside, ouchy to center sous gare- av.de grancy, to above central "downtown lausanne" rte. de berne, and finally chailly before you reach the city's outskirts going north.

from west to east you have renens, prilly, lausanne, pully and lutry.

finding available apts. is more of an issue.

Thanks for the list, epicure! That's very helpful. I will keep my fingers crossed for anything near these places.

It looks like transport around Lausanne is efficient, but not terribly frequent to outying areas. Is that right?

Richard, my boyfriend is working in Rolle and I'm looking for a teaching position in a kindergarten/primary school.

Could be tricky...  Without knowing where you'll be working, one or both of you could end up with a time-consuming commute.  He'll need to get to the train station to get to Rolle -- That one is easy.

Keep in mind that you aren't limited to Lausanne.  In theory you guys could live anywhere between, say, Vevey and Nyon and still maintain reasonable commute times.  Being near a train station will definitely help.
