Starting a small business - need advice!

Hello,

I am looking into starting a small business. I am a nutritionist and want to open a private practice  to meet with clients in Lausanne. I am a bit lost trying to figure out where to find information regarding necessary paperwork, permits, tax info, etc.

I have my B permit...

If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it!

Many thanks,

Ruthi

If you speak French you will find some useful ideas on the BCV web site. You may also check with the office de la promotion économique of Vaud. I assume they would speak English.

Good luck!

You could also get a lot of info from PostFinance.

Also, since you already have a specific idea and are in the process of puting it all together, you might find this consultant very helpful.  I'm currently taking a course with them (through chomage) on how to become independent, and they give you the necessary steps you must follow to open your own business.  The course I'm taking is in French, but some of the consultants might speak English.

actually it is quite straightforward if you are just going to be giving advice about nutrition.

if you will be independent and not be forming any kind of company,  ( sa or sarl ) you only need to register at the "registre de commerce" in the canton where you will set up. and this, only if your annual turnover ( chiffres d'affaires ) is over 75'000 sfr. ( it may have increased !) and you can do this via the internet.
i have done this quite a few times. in fact, if you have no idea of the turnover you will have, then you don't even have to register. be sure to continue to pay your avs minimum every year so as not to lose out when you retire.

also, be sure that you have the required credentials to set  up as a "nutritionist" in the canton as there may be specific requirements to use that title.

I would also consider a couple of points related to your work permit:

1. You may want to ask in the Office de la Promotion Economique in Vaud whether it is possible for a person with a B permit to work independently. I started up my own company just over 10 years ago as I was told that I could not work independently with a B permit. I could only do it with a C permit (which I now have). Please note that I live in Geneva and not Vaud and therefore the regulations could be different.

2. Are you close to obtaining your C permit? If yes, you may want to wait a few months until you receive and then set yourself up independently as other contributors to this post suggest. Starting an Sarl or SA can be quite expensive and may not be worth it for the type of business you plan to operate.

Good luck with setting up your business.

Thank you for the reminder to check on requirements to be listed as a nutritionst. I suppose these can vary between countries...

Hello!

I wanted some onformations about starting up an entreprise and I ran into a website called startups.ch

Normaly they help you with opening your business (I think thats around 2000chf, but apparently worthy, since any advice/servic you take (from lawyers, etc) costs a lot.

But, without obligations, they are having 2h courses (anyone is welcome) about starting up a business - basics, and there you can ask them any question about your own business. I went to the course and it was quite helpfull. The course is FREE :)
