Hi Steph,
Students are exempted from signing contracts with (expensive) swiss insurance companies and can avail cheap policies with standard benefits. the usuall costs are around 1000 chf per year with 300 deductable. I use swisscare insurance and pretty happy with it.

Please be aware that these "alternatives" to regular Swiss health insurance will not offer the same coverage. Read the contract very well before you sign it. There was a thread a few months ago about a student who had one of these insurances and who got cancer that needed an expensive treatment, and the insurance just stopped paying after a certain amount. This will not happen with a "regular" health insurance who operates under Swiss health insurance law.
I'm not saying they're all bad, just keep it in mind before you sign anything. As they operate under private law they can choose the conditions as they like and exclude certain diseases from coverage.

Hey Steph
I'm a student here, the best health insurance for international students is with CSS, they have an office on rue de la confederation. It's 100CHF a month, you get exactly the same coverage as the normal one, but the deal is that you can only have it whilst you're a student and then they expect you to leave or get real insurance once you graduate (i.e. before you actually start being a drain on them!).
Hope that helps.

Well other than Farhan recommended, I would also tell you to to have a look at this German company http://www.mawista.com/ , I'm insured by them, and this is the third year of my studies in Zurich.
You apply online so that's not a big problem.
Good luck!

Been using score studies for 3 years now, no problem at all.
When I was deciding I saw some posts on www.englishforum.ch regarding it not being good or legal blah blah.. I think they were not correct at all
the service is efficient, just go through the detailed list of benefits before appliying

I was unable to find any discussions on them on englishforum or anywhere else.
Although, they are officially recommended on Unil and UNIGE web-sites.
