Hello all,
My family and I are thinking to relocate to Lausanne or Vevey sometime next year.
But I am only willing to move if my chances to get a job in the area are relatively high! At the moment we live in Montreal, I speak English, German and French (although my French needs to be brushed up). I am a Human Resources professional and have specialized in Organizational Development and Talent Management, I also have experience in generalist HR roles. I always thought I would be a good fit for Nestlé but I learned that they are very strong to recruit from inside and hardly ever recruit from outside their organization :(
Here are my questions:
Is the job market really that difficult?
Searching through job sites, it seems there are not many international employers in the area, or am I mistaken?
Would the job search be easier in Geneva?
Can anyone recommend an employment agency, as it will be difficult to apply from Canada?
Anyone working in this industry willing to help?
Many thanks to you in advance!
Marion

Hi Marion:
Looks like many multinational companies recruit HR specialists that have been trained in Switzerland and have knowledge of expat procedures...Most of them either swiss or been resident in switzerland for some time. Unless/if your current employer has a subsidiary or parent company in Geneva,Lausanne or Vevey, or if you are willing to consider joining an NGO in Lausanne or Geneva where many international agencies are located.
There are specific Non-governmental organisations sites on the net and you should track those for an opportunity in your field with situation in Geneva,Nyon or Lausanne, Suisse Romande..
Make the best of above. Cheers

Hello Alfi
Thanks a lot for your reply, I appreciate it!
I did actually reside (and work) in Zurich for some years, but I am not into expat management.
But thank you for bringing up the NGOs. I will certainly look into it - that could be an interesting option!
Best wishes from Montreal,
Marion

Hi Marion
It is becoming more and more difficult to find any kind of employment in Switzerland, regardless of how well qualified you are. Nestlé is certainly a good company to work for, but as you rightly surmise, very tricky for someone from outside to gain meaningful employment. Geneva has perhaps more opportunity, but the situation with housing there is catastrophic. Finally, just recently, a survey was published which confirmed that Switzerland is now the most expensive country in the world.
For many years, and very successfully and with great pleasure, I tutored a beautiful girl from Quebec. She has now had enough of Switzerland and left last Tuesday to relocate to New Jersey. Whatever you do, don't come without a firm offer of a job - foreigners make up a large percentage of the unemployed in CH at the moment.
All the best anyway

Hi Sheila
Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. My husband has a standing job offer in Villeneuve, but I am just too uncomfortable to move without a job for myself. So whereever I would find a job, I will have to commmute from Lausanne or Vevey. I will investigate the job market in Geneva more closely. Thanks for your comments.
Why did the girl from Quebec have enough of Switerland?? Any specific reason?
Best,
Marion

Hello again Marion
Villeneuve is very pleasant - right at the bottom of the lake with a beautiful old town. It would be a miracle if you were both to be offered positions whilst still outside Switzerland but of course one never knows, depending on whether your particular metier is sought after or not.
No, Valérie did not have "enough" of Switzerland : she actually married an American!
Although we live just alone the lake and actually in France, if there is anything additional we can do to hegp, just let us know. At least you probably speak French!
All the best
