semi-new in town, looking for workout or library buddies?

Hello everyone! I've posted to the forum before, but haven't really introduced myself... I figured now would be a good time to do so!

I'm Zoe, and I've been living in Lausanne since September with my boyfriend, who's attending school at ECAL (the art school in Renens). We're both American, and lived in Paris before coming here. I'm actually a graduate student as well, finishing my Masters in Fine Arts in Film at Columbia University in New York, and happy to be here in peaceful Lausanne, where I've been getting lots of necessary writing done.

My boyfriend is fluent in French, and I speak some... although it was a shock when I first lived in a French-speaking city and realized just how many French words and expressions totally stumped me even after my studies!

Since we're graduate students, and on a limited budget, we tend to eat in most of the time and save the nights out for vacations, and watch a lot of movies (and American TV!) on the computer. However, one indulgence I've allowed myself is to join a gym, Holmes Place.

I always see/hear Anglophone gym-goers in the locker rooms or in classes, but I'm a little shy about just going up to introduce myself ("hey, we both speak English, what's up?"!!), so I'm wondering if any other glocals members are also Holmes Place members, and if so, if you might want to take a class together some time? Alternately, I go to the library at Riponne a lot, and I would be happy to meet other folks who write/study there, too... or, just other students who are getting accustomed to Swiss/Lausannois culture!

Talk to you soon!

Hi Zoe,

I'm certain you're both going to enjoy Lausanne. It seems that you have started off well. Diana, my wife joined Holmes Place and thinks it's great. As part of the work I do (I'm a business consultant specialising in Innovation and Commercial Strategy), I have started a new business 'network of networks' for the Arc Lemanique. For anyone interested, it's a free network at www.localbusnet.com/index.asp.

Anyway, getting back to your point, I often get to work in cafe's and libraries (sometimes Riponne, more often the Chauderon one, just because it is bigger). My pick of the cafes is Bar Tabac in rue Beau Sejour - which is where I like to meet up with friends, and you can make much more noise than in libraries :)

I'm always available for a coffee, so let me know if it would suit you to meet up. Thanks to BusNet, Networking is now part of my way of life - or as we put it Right Place, Right Time, Same Wavelength.

A beintot,

James

Hi Zoe,

I'm glad you started this thread! I'm in a similar situation. I moved here in January with my boyfriend and am doing my Masters in Education (with a university in Virginia) as well as freelance writing. I've been trying out different cafes and libraries to work in. I'm going to check out the library in Riponne today, actually.

It would be really nice to meet up. Writing is usually such a solitary activity.
