The beauty of this comedy is that it jumps forward and backward like your memory would work., i.e. not in a linear way but driven by your mood and feelings. This movie makes reference to other genres as well. It is frech, funny, highly enjoyable, well writen, excellent lines and in the end much closer to reality than what we usually see. This is the kind of independent US cinema that has much more in common with European movies than hollywwod stuff.
The story is simple, a guy meets a girl and falls in love (the line on the elevator dialogue is simply excellent) but the girl does not want anything serious. The good thing is that for once it is the other way round. The movie has been inspired by the true story of the author.
The guy is a simple employee, nothing special and although the girl likes him she does not fall in love. The movie does not say much as to why but I guess that it is because this guy is not particularly ambitious and is definitely not a high achiever.
Let's be honnest here. We guys look at the physical aspect first (here there is a large spectrum as to what we like, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and often more than the physical aspect what we really look at is the charm of the lady... and this is sometime very different than beauty...) we then look at a fun person to be with and we do not care at all about her job or carreer (there are some exceptions like guys that cannot achieve anything by themselves and look for a girl to support them materially). You ladies look for high achievers, you use different words that are all synonims in the end (self confident, powerfull, ambitious...) then you look at someone that listens to you and the physical aspect is often secondary. This is how things work, that's life.
Back to the movie, again this is an excellent moment of fun, fresh and right on so many things (how one thing is funny or not just because of the mood your are in). It makes a lot of references to other genres. I would say that the only mistake is the young girl caracter that is useless and too much of a cliché.
In a nutshell this is an excellent movie to have a good laugh, it is light but full of little gems and the right way to put a stressfull week behind you. This is a concentration of fun, highly enjoyable. I would be happy to achieve something similar with my first movie.

So happy you posted this review because it's one of those movies that looks great in the trailers, so will definitely catch it once it's out on dvd, which should be soon.
The lead actor Joseph Gordon Levitt, has been around for as long as I can remember as a child actor starting out on tv shows and various movies; it's nice to see him taking on the lead role. But as with many child actors, it's strange seeing them in adult situations, kinda like watching your own little brother growing up and seeing him dating someone.
There are so many movies out there rehashing the same love story plot so it's nice they at least modify the cinematography to make it unique. I shall definitely check this one out on when it's out on dvd.
As for women checking out the men: women have always looked for the strong alpha male. it's just a primal instinct to bearing strong offsprings, but good to know what some men look for in women. According to some guys I've recently met, I'm told the women these days (at least here in nyc) are so demanding and are such high maintenance primadonnas that they vow never to date certain genre of women. But that helps women like me because there is disproportionately more women in this city!! :( I was out at a brunch last weekend, sitting at a table of 12, and only 1 male at the table, and no, he was not interesting; didn't even exchange a word with him.
