We just read this in our book club. It's the story of a family dealing with the widower father's decision to marry a young Ukrainian woman so she has a chance at a better life in the UK. All kinds of antics, comedy, abuse, and heartbreak follow for everyone involved. Through the new husband-wife relationship, the author explores not just the newlyweds, but also the two grown daughters' relationship with each other, their father, the new wife, and their dead mother.
Overall, the group enjoyed the book. The descriptions of the interactions between the various family members, as well as the Ukrainian-tinged dialogue were very skillfully done, making the book realistic and utterly believable. One or two people found the book frustrating...but maybe that's how the author wanted it to be! You'll have to see for yourself....

I was intrigued by the 'Short History of Tractors' - it brought back memories of Gogol's Dead Souls. Anyone up for a temporary swap :) ?

Just finished this over the weekend - Thoroughly loved it! The exploration of the theme of filial piety, relationships between siblings, parents etc as well as the whole issue of the "grass is always greener" was done with a great amount of wit and humour.
