This great german movie sheds a terrible light on former East Germany. Through the story of a playwright spied by the Stasi (state security), it shows how the regime could destroy almost everybody: those who served it faithfully, those who opposed it, those who made compromises. The only ones who thrive are those who threw their values and got completely corrupted. At the same time a breathtaking thriller with great acting, made with 1% of the budget of a Hollywood movie.
Beware: the movie is in german, with french and italian subtitles only!

If you have to see one movie this year this is the one (well we will see what will come out but this will be among the best of the year for sure)... beside having its historical merits it is a great story above all with a lot of small details that add to the excellence of the actors and plot. For those who have seen Good Bye Lenin (another great movie on the DDR) this is not a comedy but a dramatic love story, however do not miss it!

I totally agree - it's a great movie. At first I though "Nah, this is probably going to be some depressing guilt-laden history lesson". But it's not. It's actually a very gripping thriller that succeeds at showing you a piece of recent history as well.

Only recently caught this movie, and I echo the enthusiastic review. It was perfect--almost stunningly so. For his first feature-length film, the Director (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) does an outstanding job in creating a particular ambiance in the movie--a kind of quiet paranoia from life lived under the gaze of Big Brother--and by the end of the flick, there's a tension and pull to the movie that's seemed to materialize, just as delicately, out of nowhere. It's been a while since I've left a movie as impressed as I was after seeing this one. It's still playing at the Cinelux now, so if you're interested, try to catch it on the big screen while you still can. Highly recommended.
