Atonement is indeed an interesting movie.
Handsomely shot in a photogenic, rambling England country estate. A good story line, decently adapted from the novel. The short section on Cecelia's teasing, confusion and sexual tension, leading to the plot's development is interesting.
Yet, parts of the movie seem irrelevant. For example, during the long segment on World War II, the movie seems to run aground, losing coherence and focus. There are some powerful images there... of scared soldiers, tired of war, hiding in a house, running in the field, horses on the beach, of wounds and limbs. For a while, I felt that much of the section on the war was detached, with a secondhand feeling. Perhaps, it was creative genius of the director... trying to get our mind linger, swept away into incoherence... and then, to be atoned by a powerful finish.
This movie is well worth a lazy evening, followed by drinks by a fireplace and sleepy discussions! :-)
