Folk/Roots Music: Would Love to Hear Your Contributions and Discoveries

I was browsing the U.S. Library of Congress website and came across this resource on the "American Folklife Center" page.

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/afccchtml/cowhome.html

The site gives this "definition" of "folklife:"

"The traditional songs we sing, listen and dance to

Fairy tales, stories, ghost tales and personal histories

Riddles, proverbs, figures of speech, jokes and special ways of speaking

Our childhood games and rhymes"

I was hoping people might post their links to folk/roots music from other countries as well...Thanks!

As far as Switzerland goes, you can’t beat le ranz des vaches (the song starts at 3:06) It is said that, in the 18th century, Swiss mercenaries were forbidend to sing it because it led them to nostalgia to the point of desertion, illness or death (Wikipedia)

Great thread. Thank you, Translator!

The first video is of a Native Australian master playing a 70 year old didgeridoo. Sublime.

The second video is of a French band called Highlight Tribe, not pure folk, but a brilliant mixture of folk from multiple continents plus electronica, play it at your own risk. I took the liberty of posting it as I found them to be fantastic modern proponents of folk music; plus they have a didge that leads.

Enjoy! :)

Robeson: what a man, athlete and intellect.  Thanks for reminding me to pull out my CD and appreciate the voice again.

I used to sing my boys to sleep with this, one of my favourites from Arlo (in fact they're all my favorites).

I had the distinct pleasure once of hearing Pete Seger and Arlo Guthrie together in concert.
