If you are renting DVDs, you can have the film in French (even an English one) and have the French Subtitles on as well. Very useful in ensuring that you don't miss anything when the dialogues go too quickly for your current French level.

Some of the recent ones I saw are really good:

'Les chansons d'amour' is very entertaining, almost like a musical.

'Commes les autres' a beautiful story line. Lambert Wilson is really good in this though on a more serious note " of Gods and Men" or "les hommes et des dieux"

'Amelie' is an all time favourite for me, so you one can see it several times. Audrey Tautou in "Coco Avant Chanel"

Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard are pretty good in " Jeux d'enfants"

Definitely worth checking out Juliette Binochette in "Paris"/ "Paris j'taime"/"Trois couleurs blue"

I'll keep you posted on the other interesting french movies.

I am watching so many to improve my french, so I am always looking for good suggestions :)

Oi Paula!

I did that and found it really helped in improving my understanding of the French language. As for understanding the French people (which include my better-half), I guess I'll have to keep learning.

If you have to watch them with subtitles, make sure you see them again, sans sous-titres. It helps! :)

Here're a few classics that I found brilliant:

1) Jean de Florette & Manon de sources
2) La Grande Bouffe
3) Diner de Cons
4) Notre Dame de Paris
5) La Haine
6) Les Bronzés (the whole series)
7) Gendarmes de St. Tropez (the whole Gendrames series)
8) L'aile ou la cuisse
9) Gazon Maudit
10) Les Visiteurs (Part I & II)
11) Les Valseuses
12) Tchao Pantin
13) La Verité si je mens
14) Le Père Noël est une ordure
15) TAXI (whole series)

Voila, happy watching. Fica Legal. :)

Speaking of which "Midnight in Paris" though not a French movie, but was extremely enjoyable and was like a perfect movie, one of Woody Allen's finest. A good way to improve French would be to see English movies with the French subtitles. I highly recommend seeing "Midnight in Paris".

I LOVED that film!! Saw it last night with a Belgian and she loved it too - classic. Whatever the language, Woody Allen - love him or hate him (and for many reasons I can understand why you do.....) he is STILL a brilliant script writer. Feel good movie and makes you question if you're still happy on this side of the fence, or whether the grass is greener....I got my answers watching this film! Love it - highly recomend it - thanks GHOSH :-)
