German films
I thought I remembered that someone listed here recently some good films coming out of Germany??? To which I would add Stadtgespraech (if my memory serves me well, was a loooong time ago I saw it).

However, searches not bringing up anything...

In any event, if anyone has any German film recommendations would be most grateful to receive them.

Danke!

Die Fälscher!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813547/

But it's an austrian film. I haven't seen it yet but the main actor is quite good!

And another austrian one: Hundstage - A good and terrible film at the same time!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290661/

And you could have a look for directores like Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, maybe Fatih Akin etc.

Thanks Katja! Austrian good too. Is partly about helping my bro learn German, and partly watching good films...

Will be in Germany beginning of May and happy to go source and then lend any of the films I put my hands on.

This is another opportunity to say what I already stated earlier: German cinema is going through an AMAZING rebirth. It produces every year one or two world class absolute masterpieces (see more on the earlier thread). If you like cinema, don't miss it !!!!!

For everybody who speaks /understand Bavarian - there are three great movies of Marcus Rosenmüller: (1) Wer früher stirbt ist länger tot, (2) Schwere Jungs und (3) - ganz neu - Beste Zeit. I have all three DVD's and think about a German (Bavarian?) DVD-event. All films can be seen with subtitles. The brand new one is from Til Schweiger "Keinohrhasen", which is still not available on DVD.

Hi there

Another one for you. A brilliantly funny film about the guy who did the fakes on Hitler's diaries some 20 years ago. A true story. The main actors are three quite well known men, Uwe Ochsenknecht, Harald Juhnke and Götz George. It is really brilliant. Or maybe I have to say, it was brilliant as I saw it only once, some twenty years ago. But I remember it quite well.

Ah, yeah. The name.

It is called "Schtonk".

Have fun. You will find quite a lot of pearls if you have a look on the german chains on Naxoo. Usually that kind of stuff is emitted 2015 during the week.

So I think it's really a shame that I haven't even heard about this movie!

But I hope I can manage to see it this year - if might fit into this 40th anniversary of '68.

HUNDSTAGE!!

Wow Katja, you dare to recommend it in public. Indeed an excellent film, but definitely not mainstream ("Hard to Stomach but Well-Made and Poignant" / "an Austrian film following the lives of several depressed, deranged and annoying people and their abusive relationships with each other").

Talking about this kind of difficult-to-digest films, I'd add Oskar Roehler, e.g.

- Der Alte Affe Angst

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338714/

- Agnes und seine Brueder

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389738/

Ok, films I now have in my possession are

Auf der anderen Seite

Die Faelscher

Gegen die Wand

Sophie Scholl

Der Untergang

Wer fruehr stirbt is laenger tot

Der Freie Wille

Der Krieger + Die Kaiserin (think lady in the shop recommended me last two)

I left one or two w my bro in Germany, incl Das Boot, Der Himmel ueber Berlin

Happy to lend &/or organise DVD night for those interested. Not whilst sun is shinining outside though... Die DVDs laufen uns ja auch nicht weg!

Anyone got Stadtgeschpraech? Or does my memory serve me badly and it is not worth another watch? Saw it when it came out '96. Couldn't order this one even on DVD in the shop.

A DVD evening with "Die Fälscher" (to please Katja) or "Die Welle" (for hefelix) sounds good.

I'd be also up for a Bavarian night with this "Jagdszenen" Film, but I don't own the film.

One of the next Fridays 9 or 10 pm??

From the radio deutsche welle site's Kino program!

German Films Quarterly is our English-language quarterly journal and appears as follows:

February (for the Berlinale), mid May (for Cannes), beginning of August (for the summer festivals Locarno, Montreal, Venice, San Sebastian, Toronto), and at the end of October (for the fall and winter festivals Hof, MIFED, AFM, FIPA).

New German Films from the latest issue Quarterly 2/2008

So I suppose some of these will be out later this year after Cannes ...:)

Hi there,

I would also recommend "Good Bye Lenin!" - it's a truly excellent one about the fall of the Berlin Wall, touching though not weepy but also very funny.

And "Lola rennt", of course (with Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu)

The text you are quoting:
Hi there,

I would also recommend "Good Bye Lenin!" - it's a truly excellent one about the fall of the Berlin Wall, touching though not weepy but also very funny.

And "Lola rennt", of course (with Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu)

Stadtgespraech (Talk of the Town) with Katja Riemann, who was also in: Der bewegte Mann and Ein Mann für jede Tonart - 2 very funny movies.

To the list of recommendations one could also add Fassbinder's classics: Lili Marleen, Berlin Alexanderplatz and The Marriage of Maria Braun.

Viel Spass!

Do you have Stadtgespraech? I couldn't even order a copy of it on DVD when I was recently in Hamburg. Saw it years ago and would love to see it again

Yes I do, on tape though. It was on Arte a while ago and I recorded it. Val and Simone, you're welcome to watch it.

and I just saw a few good ones on airplane - Keinohrhasen (directed by Til Scweiger, who also starred) and Ein Freund von mir. Both had another guy in them who played a similar character - at least they both liked to say all was geil, top, cool.

I enjoyed them both, and look forward to the winter evenings and watching more... All welcome to join. Just let me know if interested and I organise sth. Probably not till towards end of Nov
