Why didn't we in the UK notice George was gay?

You weren't in the UK during the 80's I guess. It was a time of Big hair with loads of hairspray, it was a time of vast amounts of badly applied makeup, it was a time of sparkly BIG loud jewellery, and flowing baggy white silk shirts, and that was just the men. Yes it was a time when Women were women and men were, at least fashion wise, confused...

In fact what we didn't realise at the time was George was being openly gay, we just didn't know the signs:

1 - Very well groomed
2 - Perfect hair
3 - In great shape
4 - Comfortable with his masculinity
5 - All the women fancied him

And a large part of the reason why we were so confused - Duran Duran and the rest of the "New Romantic" movement. They wore suits combined with sparkly jewellery big hair and often makeup.

Previously our models as to how british men dressed were Lemmy from Motorhead and the Sex Pistols, needless to say after being shouted at by our mothers for looking like we had been dragged through a hedge backwards we jumped at the chance of a new look... and now most men who have any photos of themselves from that era understand the expression look before you leap, at least where fasion is concerned.
