L'Avocat de la terreur - French documentary
This is a documentary about Me Verg?s, certainly the most famous lawyer in France. He started his career defending Djamilah an Algerian bomber young lady and fell in love with her. You feel some sympathy for him, he is sensitive despite his choices in life... despite his anger... he has the fascination of the devil in a way... because when you see what kind of circles he was involved in, it is not who he defended (someone has to do it)... but who some of his 'friends' were!

The guy has certainly the biggest ego. When he defended Klaus Barbie the butcher of Lyon (a Nazi officer) he was alone facing 40 lawyers and said they are all worth 1/40 of him... He had a life full of mystery. He disappeared during eight years and nobody knows what he really did... he was befriend with terrible people... He is left wing extremist... anti-colionalist... the documentary says he was born angry... anyway you understand some of his choices... he is an excellent Sophist for sure...

The excellent thing about this documentary is that you go through the last 50 years of contemporary history and learn a lot. Whatever you think of this guy, it is a fascinating documentary... well structured, good rythm...

See it if you can...

It is in French.

I saw this documentary about 2 weeks ago and I do agree with you it is very interesting and informative. I had heard about this lawyer and after seeing the film I'm glad to have learned about his background.
Have you seen The short life of Jos? Antonio Gutierrez? This is about the green card soldiers in the USA. This film tells you the life of this guy starting in Guatemala where he was a street kid and then entered the USA illegally and later on joined the USA army and ended up in Iraq in order to get a green card.

this is indeed a great documentary. I find M. Verges so intriguing, maybe tightly dangerous, but definitely a very bright man who ask v. good questions at the right time! Agree that the historical part made part of the attraction of the movie, but I must admit that coming out I had to do some reasearch on the Internet, as did not really remember some of the events talked about. But this is good, I learnt a lot. More like this pls!

There were times when there were certainties, when it was clear what cruelty, brutality and malice stand for and that those siding with it are evidently up to no good.
In my opinion, the lines of moral standards are pretty blurred here; a man whose ties are extremely controversial is being portrayed through a series of interviews. There is nothing mysterious or idealistic about this character, don't let him fool you. Verges comes across as a slippery manipulator, a malevolent egomaniac, he has his own agenda and he is absolutely unconcerned by moral dilemmas.
Best to look for further sources of information as Schroeder is not taking any position here.
