This is a drama retracing the day to day life of some long date immigrants in Marseille. The difficulties they have to find their place in the world of today although their children have been born in France.
It's a story of a 60 year old shipyard worker made redundant. He decides to open a restaurant on a ship. The movie shows the difficulties and struggles against bureaucracy. The guy is very touching because sincere in his dream, he wants to leave something to his children, prove to them he is not a failure, he works hard to make his dream come true. The movie shows the generosity of these simple people, it shows their willingness to go through life although it is all but easy. It is a very sad movie but with a lot of touching moments.
Sometimes we live in our little world, more or less perfect and we do not realise that it is tough out there. I had my battles to fight, lost many of them; but in the end it looks likes it was worth it, because the war has been won... and now I move to something else. Yes life is not always easy but fighting to make it better is what makes the difference in the end. The willingness to move on, too many people have lost it.
I saw a statistic the other day, 25% of the people living in Switzerland are depressive! Not all are aware of it but a 1/4 of the population! This is a frightening number. I wonder who these people are. I mean, a friend pharmacist told me the other day that what they sell most are anti-depressive drugs to people between 25 and 40 years old. And she tells me they are not necessarily socially disadvantaged people. I am wondering if our generation had it too easy, no wars, we were never hungry... and people have just forgotten that you need to fight in life. For that I must say I was lucky because although we never missed anything at home we were never spoiled as children.
Well all this to say that this guy did not give up, had not an easy life and he deserved a better end. The movie is kind of post-modern neo-realistic stuff, no professional actors, real life small and big challenges, daily struggles... the movie has its merits, it is not a self-pity stuff, it shows some nice moments of solidarity and thus gives some hope...
Technically speaking most of the scenes are too long in my opinion making it sometimes 'boring'.
This is a French movie.
