Steve Martin and John Candy teamed up for Planes, Trains and Automobiles in 1987 and it has been my favorite holiday film ever since. Elf runs a pretty close second, but Steve Martin and John Candy were exceptional in this film about getting home for the holidays (in this case, Thanksgiving). I imagine the transit strike over the border is causing some similar real life situations!
I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy and watching it with friends and popcorn.
