First just few words to say that I am not going nuts (more then usual) or that I am not SO bored that the only think i have left to do i watching TV. Quite the opposite actually. in the last days I found myself talking to some colleagues and friends about TV series, how much we love them, how we split in groups of ppl that like the same 'style' of series .. what devilish workarounds we find to watch them when they are not yet broadcasted here and how do we record them not to miss 1 bit.
The best part of all was comparing and listing all the series we love and why. So now I curious to see what other ppl like and why ...
here 's my list of Favourites by 'type'.
- Teen Drama. Well I started watching TV series when I was in High school, so this group is very well represented.
Beverly Hills 90210. The first Teen Series/Drama i started watching. If i look back now if was the most unrealistic thing ever, with 30something palying teenagers living the spoiled life in Beverly Hills. But I got hoocked. And it marked my teens years and for sure my sense of fashion (or Bad Sense of fashion). Brenda Walsh layers and high waist jeans anyone????
Dawson's Creek. My All time teem series Favourite. It started when I was a bit older in italy (I think i was 17 or 18) but I fell in love with it from day one. Teens that are more responsible then their parents, and try to psychoanalyze themselves by talking about everything. MidClass teens living in a small town and ... well .. just too many other small things that made it easy to relate to it. Cried when it ended.
Funny to say that I bought the whole series in DVD and it's still one of my favourite cheer up/chill down/there's always hope way of spending lazy days.
- SitCom/Real life/Humor - too many that can be classified here ... I tried to elminate as many as possibile but the list is still quite long.
Friends - I cried when I couldn't buy the tower with all the DVDs cause it was out of stock in Italy. I started watching it when I was way too young to even immagine how the life of 20something going on 30 could be, and I loved it nevertheless. Now I am completely hoocked to the re-runs, given then more suitable age. And .. well I am happy that I have some friends like that in real life. Even thou .. I think I can blame on Friends (and ER) my not-too-brilliant love life, when u fall in Love with Chanlder at the age of 14 ... nothing can be as good :P
Ally McBeal - Have to say I love the first series more then the last ones, but still, Ally is the one show that will always always always cheer me up. No matter what.
Most frequently used sentence during the show - oh well, cheer up, i am not THAT bad yet ;P
Sex and the City - for airing problems and crap timing, i never manage to watch this one proparly, but just episodes here and there skipping whole seasons. Nevertheless is one of my favourite. Snappish, Sassy, Smart .. and full of gorgeus clothes.
Scrubs - well for an ER addicted this is a must. Started watching it because i was intrigued and loved ER, and kept watching it for it surreality and comic gags. And .. of course ... this is where the nickname BAMBI came from. (and how can anyone not find Bambi cute and cuddly???)
- Mistery/Action: I never thougjht that a teen drama junkie like me could like this kind of series SO much .. but .. here they go.
X- files. My very first TV serie ever. Started it cause my dad liked it .. and ... kept watching it till they started making crappy movies out of it. And of course the Mulder and Scully thing kept my teenage romance craving at bay. Does anyone knows how it ended????
CSI (all, but mainly Las Vegas). Warning: I am a Patricia Cornwell junkie, so when they launched the serie i thought: wow, now I don't have to wait 1 or 2 years between books! I can watch it on TV every week!! I love the drill, and it appeals to my geek/nerdish side with all the super hi-tech gadgets. Maybe it's because the first one is always better, or beacuse Horazio is no Grissom ... but ... the Miami one is not the same.
Prison Break - the case of the year. Most probabily the show with the highest concentration of men ever and with the best looking one in the last 2/3 years ....
Still .. hottie is not the only reason why i like this show. Nice directed, lots of suspence .. disgusting moments where i just couldn't stop watching ... can't wait for season 2.
Without a Trace/Criminal Minds. On the same line as CSI. my geeky twin loves them.
- Vintage: as in ... 80ies and before ...
Fame: what else can a wannabe pianist watch before going to school? (they were airing at 7am in italy) ... been in love with it ever since (and I blame it for my love of musical in general)
Baywatch: The Must See for someone growing up next to a beach and having as aspiration to be a lifeguard as a summer job. And all those boys!!
- First love: Saved by the bell. The show that got me into the teen drama addiction. Perfect for someone going to 'mid-school' in italy (I think it's 7th and 8th grade equivalent) ... wanting to go to highschool asap. And the blonde actor ...
- Longest relationship: ER. One word: LOVE. I love the show. Always loved it, from the first episode, even after 12years I never get tired of watching it, of wanting to know what's the next twist in the plot. I realized who George Clooney is with that show (and started liking older men ...) ... and .. I had what is till now the longest 'crush' of TV history. 11 years having a 'TV crush' on Dc. Carter. I even contemplated stop watching the show when he left ... but .. I am just too addicted.
- Don't know why I don't get hooked. For a TV junkie like me it's kinda weird. But I don;t know why I didn't get hoocked in these super popular TV series.
Buffy and Charmed, and then more recently : 24, Alias, Lost and .. Desperate Housewife (yeah i like the last one .. but ... I don't come back home to set the VHS recorder for that ...) ....
Well .. I hope I am not the only TV junkie here ...

If you like ER, you should like this... It's a cross of Ally McBeal and ER to me... Very fun to watch... I have been watching season 1 and 2 this week (2 or 3 episodes a day) and I can't get enough, I laugh outloud to my tv (my cats think am mad).
So you might like that one...

Yes, it's true.... I wait anxiously for the most current episode of Lost to be released in i-tunes so I can download it every week. I've been hooked since the first episode. People say the third season is a bit weak, but I still love every minute of it!
We also download Desperate Housewives and are making our way through all five seasons of 24. CSI, Prison Break, & Grey's Anatomy all get high marks in my book too.
But my all-time favorites are still Sex and the City, Seinfeld, and Friends.
There are my 2-cents! :)

I take it we should be telling of long term love affairs with shows, not just passing fancies?
Blackadder: so well writen, so full of whit, so definately the reason why i could never watch Rowan Atkinson doing the god awful Mr Bean! if you have never seen this show, you have definately missed out!
Coupling: Always billed as the 'English Friends' but so much better, the comedy is so much sharper (or maybee just more English and that's why i love it!?)
Top Gear: A show about fast cars, exciting stunts and blowing up caravans! what's not to love about it! and the sheer inginuity of the ideas they come up with is genius :-)
Scrubs: as already mentionned, so funny i thinki have watched them all at least 3 or 4 times and still find it funny.
Six Feet Under: So well thought out and made, film production values in a TV series :-)
Faulty towers: Probably just too darn English for most tastes, but there is a reason it has been voted best comedy show for the last 25 years !! my sides actually hurt after watching it!
Little Britain: the new pretender to the crown of best comedy show ever (UK) very funny and very quotable, don't watch if you can offended in anyway, as these guys really push it! but maybee won't be so long lasting as Faulty towers..?
Dr Who: already mentionned i know, but it is such an institution in the UK!! EVERYONE hid behind the sofa from the Daleks!!!
I just know that 5 minutes after posting this i am going to remember a whole rack of great shows that i haven't listed here, but i was trying only to put my absolute favorites down.... there are many many other really good shows i remember. i just have a sneaky feeling i m forgetting one of my all tiem favourites, so hard to remeber as my TV is connected only to my DVD player and Xbox these days...

About the only thing I rate in the current crop is Aaron Sorkin's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". At their best, Sorkin's scripts possess the kind of wit and kinetic energy of a Howard Hawks film. The only open questions are whether the cast here can rise to the moment as their predecessors did on "The West Wing" and also whether the premise of the show (essentially a drama about the acts of writing and performing comedy) is too formally complex to sustain a network series.
For comedy, I have to mention The Office (U.S.). The show is a bit warmer than the UK original (funny that!) but not at the expense of the bleak and black humour which is still going strong into the 3rd season.
"Lost" just keeps getting more and more bizarre this season--at this point still in a good way, but if it goes off the rails could get really messy.
I used to enjoy ER but they lost me that season (was it 11?) when they had two helicopter accidents as major plot devices. As a consolation I'm slowly working my way through the early seasons when the show was less soap operatic and more literate and human. And, as a bonus, the episodes are all new to me since I was rarely sitting at home on Thursday nights in the early 90's when they first aired.
The text you are quoting:
About the only thing I rate in the current crop is Aaron Sorkin's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". At their best, Sorkin's scripts possess the kind of wit and kinetic energy of a Howard Hawks film. The only open questions are whether the cast here can rise to the moment as their predecessors did on "The West Wing" and also whether the premise of the show (essentially a drama about the acts of writing and performing comedy) is too formally complex to sustain a network series.

A few series I like, or liked, in no particular order;
- 24. Probably the most addictive ever, one of the few with a really new concept.
- Friends. 'nuff said.
- X-files. I don't really like SF stuff or things like that, but I remember watching the first few seasons every late monday on TSR, good times. But then, it went downhill, I found.
- Dream on, or something like that. X-files made me thought of it, it was like 10-12 years ago too, and was quite funny.
- Las Vegas. Really well done, good cast, I love the athmosphere.
- Rome. Ok, it's quite violent. But well, Rome at that time (Caesar's) was, and the story of these two soldiers in Rome is great.
- Boomtown. Unfortunately it didn't last long, will miss that one.
- The Shield. The story of a corrupted cop and his team, always near the line (but in what side?) of good and bad.
- Desperate Housewives. Funny, great cast, nice dialogs,...
- High Stakes Poker. Ok, that one doesn't really belong. But it's a tv show after all, with some of the best poker players in the world playing their own money. To get an idea of how it could be, you may watch this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ojeRwWIdQBM
- Prison break. Nearly as addictive as 24, I really liked that one.
- MI5, british one, loved that one.
- H. French one, with Jamel Debouze, Eric&Ramzy,... really funny.
- Sex and the city, never really followed that one (like watching it weekly), but saw a few episodes, was good.
I'm probably forgetting some, obv..
I usually watch these with my girlfriend, who watches some more while I'm playing or something like that, so I kinda watch them with one eye. Among them, the one I found quite good are Lost, ER, Numbers, FBI, and Grey's anatomy.
Three series I didn't really get the time to watch but would have loved too (maybe one day) are The Sopranos, Scrub, and six feet under.

I just finished watching the season finale of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm starring one of the creators of Seinfeld, Larry David. The series is in its sixth season and is extremely funny if you like cynical humor.
One of the best-reviewed new series is an American Movie Classics production called Mad Men. This drama is set in the late 1950s/60s Madison Avenue/New York advertising world. Great stories, characters, set design, music, and wardrobe all combine to make for riveting watching. Most all the characters drink and smoke like there's no tomorrow as they deal with life in Manhattan in the atomic age.
If you would like to information on how to download these shows, drop me an email.

how could you forget?? I actually met him during his shooting of "For Love of Money" in NYC 1992. I waited and waited til they finally came out of this loft warehouse bldg in the Village and finally i see a middle aged man barely much taller than me come out on a break. though come to think of it, he was probably just about my curren age now 15yrs ago... (gasp). I got the courage to ask for his autograph to which he was more than happy to give: "dearest yumiko, all the best, love michael". needless to say, my knees were shaking afterwards that i nearly collapsed. years later, I bumped into Alan Ruck (the geeky character in Spin City, was also in Ferris Beuller's Day Off) in my local supermarket in suburbia NY. funny enough, we were both reaching for the same broccoli to which he was gentlemanly enough to allow me to take it. One glance, and i knew he looked familiar, but couldn't place it, so left the scene of the broccoli, but then quickly realized, OMG, that's the guy in spin city! I quickly whirled back the shopping cart back towards him to have a chat, and say how much i love the show!!
having gone to school in Washington Sq. Park where movies are filmed all the time, i've meet some interesting folks, even managed to get in a film as an extra (Three of Hearts - Billy Baldwin, Sherrlyn Finn...). But my claim to fame is meeting Christian Slater, Mary Stewart Masterson and a kodak moment with them in my NY office; they used our reception area for their office scene. Next time we meet, ask me to tell you about their 2 degrees of separation to me. :)

Thank god for Bit Torrent is all i can say! as i HAVE to watch this asap
Other great new stuff:
(as already mentionned) Mad Men
Carpoolers
Chuck
Curb your enthusiasm (this latest season is the best ever!)
House
My Name Is Earl
Nip Tuck
Pushing Daises
Reaper
Secret diary of a call girl
Ugly Betty
Weeds
(still great to watch Top Gear every week, if you don't know what this show is, It's a motoring magazine show from the UK, but it lost any touch of realism years ago, now they just drive to amazing places in the worlds best cars, it's worth watching it just to get jealous of what a fantastic job the presenters have!)
All great shows, especially pushing Dasies as it's so different!
Oh.. i have been off work at home somewhat broken for 8 months, which is why i've had time to discover all these new shows ;-)

www.veoh.com
even Heros! and the latest show Journeyman that i'm now stuck on, and the remake of Bionic Woman about to start soon.
for those from the US you can gett daily webcast news updates from ABC, CBS.
It looks to be a legit site with one 30-60second commercial spots each 10min.
As a TV junky, I was proud of myself having survived a whole yr of not having a tv, but I couldn't have found this site at a better time than now when it's dark & cold outside. though I think this has ruined my chances of improving my french. nuff said.. back to my shows.. :)

Nothing to do with tv series, but something fun that happened to me more or less at the same time you saw Michael J Fox (now I'll remember his name, I promise :) ) .
When I was a kid, I was sometimes trying to get autographs from football players. The funniest was when I went to school a morning, following an indoor tournament in Geneva, with some international teams. People where telling me "Hey, Remy, you're in the newspapers!". And I was there, with a young french player signing on my t-shirt... he became quite famous after that...maybe you heard of him... he's called Zinedine Zidane ;)

Nothing to do with tv series, but something fun that happened to me more or less at the same time you saw Michael J Fox (now I'll remember his name, I promise :) ) .

which is perhaps not a reflection so much of what I think of the other series so much as the fact that I am seem to spend too much time in front of computer screens to make much effort to watch the other one which would probably be a better choice.
I still admit to liking Friends though, long after many decided was passe or uncool. And am now slowly savouring the 6 Feet Under DVDs... with no plans for any further addictions..

The characters, set design, and humor are fantastic. Very Tim Burtonesque...Tried Secret Diary of a Call Girl, but found it a bit tedious.
Found a great Canadian series titled Intelligence that is in its second season. It is set in Vancouver, BC and centers around the drug trade, confidential informants, money laundering and sharp-elbow office politics in Canadian high-level Crime and Intelligence agencies.
I love Dexter, the serial killer who kills killers with Michael Hall who played David from Six Feet Under. Might be too gory for some, though.
Does anyone know this show called Man Stroke Woman? I have seen some clips on youtube such as "Man Cold" and "Blind Date." Hilarious stuff.
Thanks, BadDNA for the other series on your list...

Mans Stroke Woman is genius! funniest sketch show since Monty Python!
It's so very hard to get a hold of though, took me ages to finally get both seasons (think that is all there is so far)
I can heartily recommend it to everyone, not sure where you can watch it now teh mighty tv-links is dead and gone :-(
BTW.. just as a side note..When are the TV companies going to realise that internet TV is not going away? if they offer us the ability to stream and watch their TV shows at a time that is convenient for us, we will happily pay for the privaledge? just a thought..
"you can never just say i look nice can you?" (inside joke for anyone who's seen Man Stroke woman!)
