UK Music Heritage

I'd like to know what comes up to your mind when thinking of the best British contribution to the world of music. What are your favourite artists, your favourite songs? It's a huge heritage and I am voluntarily excluding classical music. I am refering to the modern British popular music from the 1960s to nowadays. Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

"Forms of popular music, including folk music, jazz, pop and rock music, have particularly flourished in Britain since the twentieth century. Britain has had an impact on popular music disproportionate to its size, due to its linguistic and cultural links with many countries (...). This is particularly true since the early 1960s when the British Invasion, led by The Beatles, helped to secure British performers a major place in development of pop and rock music."

Here are a few selections of my own in line with the rock'n'roll fan girl that I am Laughing

Dear Izzie,

I am a culture and cultural heritage consultant and I deal with these questions quite a bit in my practice.  I find your question very interesting and to get best answers, you need a collation of answers from people of different ages that were exposed to different waves of UK music and musical heritage.  i am in my 30's and I would say that I have vivid memories as a child hearing a lot of classical chamber music from the Uk and religious music as well.  Another major ¨pole of UK heritage music comes from well know theatrical operas so present in the Londonian scene.

Regards Lydia

The YouTube video I am posting is not exclusively for the song. The song is included in this video from 6:25 onwards for the compilation of the famous "Sprinkler" dance that is the current rage courtesy of England Cricket Team. The song is by a band called "The Sunbeat Revival" based in Brighton whose first CD is coming out in a couple of weeks!! Both the sprinkler moves and the song are awesome........ Enjoy!

British music turned me into an Anglophile...

I could write megabytes of text about UK music throughout the years and bore you all to death, but I must first of all correct a glaring wrong on this list. I am shocked, to be honest. 50-odd replies and not one word about the Mancunian godfathers of indie rock, the Smiths???

Shame on all of us.

This is an excellent list, but without the Smith, William, it was REALLY nothing.

Hmm, well, I can definitely get with Led Zep especially Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffitti... and Robert Plant cleaned up at the past year's grammys.

And, Cas, that Cities in the Dust is another amazing song...

But Black Sabbath and those primal scream-type bands like that remind me of this

Last time I went to Verbier someone talked to me about a British musician who spent quite some time there when he was in the British army... Apparently he was also a ski champion... Here is one of his songs... Laughing

Ok, these are fairly recent... the lead signer from Everything Everything sounds a lot like early Davic Byrne of the Talking Heads, imo..

Wow!!! I have just come back from a 3-day seminar in Zürich and I am amazed by all your answers! That's fantastic! I am going to take the time to listen to every single song you posted! Thank you very much to you all for sharing your culture of great UK music! Smile Many many many thanks! Don't hesitate to share some more...

Last time I went to Verbier someone talked to me about a British musician who spent quite some time there when he was in the British army... Apparently he was also a ski champion... Here is one of his songs... Laughing

James Blunt has now passed into the English vernacular. To be referred to as 'a right James Blunt'.. is considered a great compliment. Try it with your English friends ...

Not in Switzerland though... Let's do a petition and ask her to come to Geneva, Lausanne or Zürich!
