Waltz with Bashir is one of those. It is a cartoon but a kind of documentary type and touching the very delicate and difficult subject of the massacre of Sabra and Shatila (Lebanon). It is not judgemental and one scene is really beautiful in its horror (the Waltz with Bashir). There are other very strong moments.
The movie looks into the subject of collective memory lapse. As individuals we tend to forget unpleasant memories, our brain is a strange animal than can play many tricks on us. May be it is better as individuals but collective memory should not forget.
This is a story of one of those Israeli soldiers that served in the army during this war and was there. The movie is very intelligent and follows the guy in his quest to find out if he was there and what he did during that time.
In a nutshell this is a very powerful movie, very hard but really excellent in how it has been realized. It is not judgemental but asks the right questions. If your are curious of contemporary history then do not miss it.
