"Why Americans dont get it?" - a debate on Hot Fuzz
Debate on « Hot Fuzz » - South African v/s American – made me smile...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now i'll add straight away i do believe there are some americans who understand the film, but i don't get how the others don't. My newest friend is german and i showed her this film and she loved it, even though she'd been in england a mere two weeks. If she can understand it with a language, why can't you when it's in the language urs originated from?

Disclaimer: Please note that I do say "some", not all. I did meet plenty of Americans who were well educated, classy, tolerable, wonderfull people. As I'm sure most of you are on this board.

Well, some Americans just aren't exposed to a lot of things, well, non-american. Lived in the states for about 4 years myself, and when I called back later on and put my sister on the phone to talk to them, they couldn't understand her, but she was speaking english. Just not with the twang.

Studied in your everyday, ordinary community college, but had about 25 IQ point deducted everytime I opened my mouth, just because I did not sound like them. About 90% of the time, anything I said got me a bubblegummed "Whaaaat?".

Sometimes it is due to ignorance, lack of oppertunity or just plain laziness. Could be a generation thing as well. I was about 5 years older then the average pupil at the time. And I also think my intolrance towards the kids showed. And language tolerance is something you get when you can speak more then one language.

Funny. This is a comedy, but apparently the only Americans who can understand it, by your logic, are the ones who probably wouldn't watch it. Awesome.

I can understand that, with the latest and greatest from our wonderful President, the world thinks we're all knuckle dragging morons, but comeon! Try to ignore popular media and actually THINK ABOUT IT! How ignorant can you be to generalize an entire COUNTRY, making sole exception for a non-existent subclass of "well educated, classy, tolerable, wonderfull(sic) people."
Jesus, if I knew IMDB was going to be overrun by European snipes with a chip on their collective shoulder, I might have avoided the site all together.

If my experience as a guest in your country bothers you that much, then I do apologize. Someone asked a question and I tried to answer it as objectively as I could. Obviously not everyone is going to agree with me, and that is their prerogative. No chip was involved. My intentions were not to insult or do American bashing at all.

I do realize there are more Americans who try to experience and take in as much as they can then there aren't. But the question was why some understand it and some don’t. Other then criticize what was already said, why do you think some are ignorant to the humor and/or the whole story?

I think the movie, for a large part, was ignored by most movie-going Americans. As much as I love Simon Pegg, I think he was overlooked by Paul Rogen and his cronies in their gutter humor movies which came out around the same time.
As for the accent, I think it's a matter of exposure. Like a lot of the Americans on this board, I cut my cinematic teeth on Monty Python and Are You Being Served?, moving onto things like Trainspotting and Lock,Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels when I got older. Even still, I still don't always understand some of the slang, but I can pretty much figure it out in context or ask a friend or two who have been abroad. I imagine Americans watching those films is a bit like Europeans trying to watch and understand Boondock Saints or any of the other dialect-centric movies.

That being said, the tone of this particular thread (and a few others like it) seems to be that Americans are too stupid, lazy, and closeted to understand this movie. That, rather than than your personal experience, is the sentiment that infuriates me. How arrogant and yet incredibly ignorant it is for a person to categorize an entire country and have an entire board of similar-minded chuckleheads to agree with them! It's turned an board for an awesomely funny movie into a haven for ignorant European snipes.

Cinemajunky,

I can see where you are coming from. It does go both ways, as you say with Boondock Saints and the likes of those. Went to Mississippi when in the States, and had to ask almost everyone to repeat themselves REAL slow, coz I just couldn’t get it. :-)

Being South African, I have had the opportunity to be exposed to most English dialects out there. American, British, Australian and then our very own South African (pretty much what Leo does in Blood Diamond) and I get most of it. Not all, but as you say, if you just keep up with the story, it falls into place.

It also comes down to personal taste, since the humor is a very specific type of humor. I mean Woody Allen vs. Jim Carrey. Same “thing” but nothing alike.

As far as the whole “American perception” goes, I think, from my point of view, you can thank the lovely and talented Miss Hilton and friends for that. The media has a way of just making it seem as if they are what the American dream is based on. That’s just scary. Make my skin crawl.

I can understand and appreciate that fact (that lack of exposure limits understanding) and believe me when I say that the Hiltons are as embarrassing to us as they are annoying to you. I have to agree with you also in that it's not so much understanding the language in the film as it is personal tastes in humor.

My point just comes down to a simple distaste for media fueled generalities. I agree with you on pretty much every other level. =)

If you're asking why they couldn't understand the English accents, the first person to reply is pretty much correct. Americans tend to have one mindset when it comes to language -- anything not American English is automatically tuned out in confusion. I'm American and many of us are receptive to learning new languages but it's embarassing how narrow-minded some people are. Example:

I think this is identical to all the forums on IMDB , generally a meanless debate that has too many sweeping nationalistic statements.

I'm not surprised why accents in British English create a problem for so many people , because as someone who has grown up with US Tv from an early age like almost everybody in the UK , we are familiar with most US accents and don't have any problem with understanding even the strongest accent. The same can not be said of the US , we in the UK have not been at the forefront of Global TV or Movies and therefore exposure to regional accents has been limited, for along time you would only ever hear a "posh" accent or cockney as comic relief (Dick Van Dyke's attempted Cockney accent in Mary Poppins is ranked the all time worst).

The Hot Fuzz has been made primarily for a home market distribution , even if it has had exposure in the US. I did notice that a few changes on "Shaun of the Dead" had been made for a global audience , where some words were changed for the US Market.

From someone with a strong regional british accent who has had to change it to be understood

Already worrying about why Americans don't "get" a film seems silly.

Last I saw, Americans come from all over the world, so don't insult people you are most probably related to!
They come in all shapes, colours and sizes, religions and IQ's.

As in any country, if you live near a border or a port, hey magic! you probably hear other languages and learn them. No need to be smug about that, it's called circumstances. some Americans speak French, some speak Spanish, some speak Chinese and so on. For the record, if you walk down the streets of New York, you'll hear as many languages as you do in Geneva. And yep, those are Americans.

If you live inland, you probably are stuck with fewer languages and exposure to foreign culture. Last I heard, that's not a reason to spit on someone...not even yourself.

It's purely luck if you happen to be exposed to various languages or dialects, nothing to boast about. Not really sure what the thread was supposed to show, the problem of understanding English or that there are people who like to feel superior.

I just skimmed through it as there was an awful lot to sift through. Nothing like a little self-hate and sweeping generalizations.

To be honest, I have a hard time hearing dialogue in any language if there's a lot of background noise, so I'm in the habit now of watching everything with subtitles. Hot Fuzz wasn't a problem for me with accents, but Wind that Shakes the Barley?!?! I watched it with the French subtitles (English wasn't an option) so that I could get through the Cork accents.

Kaixin, you made a heck of an assumption that "Americans don't get" Hot Fuzz. I think there are probably some Brits who "don't get" Hot Fuzz. It's a movie.

I only copy-pasted a debate from IMDB and the only sentence from me was that “it (the debate) made me smile…” – if you interpreted anything from this “smile”, I’m happy to hear your interpretation :-)

I was a little surprised... not in the whole posting that I shared my opinion, the only thing I said was this debate made me smile. I am not either pro or against either Americans or Europeans... the only thing you can say about me posting this would be either: "meaningless to post this, we are not interested" (but you can only speak for yourself) or "why does this debate make you smile? are you nuts?" I simply cant see why would you talk about my "luck to be exposed to various languages" and if you want to know: "what the thread was supposed to show" - well, I simply found it funny and wanted to share. If that is not a good intention or you guys here are too good to read this kind of stuff, I'd stop posting them.

of the pasting made it difficult to see , I immediately thought you were drawing attention to the remarks being made rather than just it made you smile.

I read IMDB alot (sad I know) and find they are full of the same and it doesn't make me smile but rather sad that so many people drift away from discussing the movie to a more personal attack on either the poster or the reply. And it seems to focus on either US or European bashing.
