la fille coupee en deux (and Shortbus)
Another film from Chabrol, one of the most prolific directors in France. He almost always analyses the bourgeoisie and their shortcomings.

La fille coupee en deux is a young lady that is seduced by an old and experienced writer. He teaches her a few things, he moves in 'perverse' circles. The young lady falls in love with the guy, accepts it all and believes his lies... too predictable, may be. Not hot scenes, so if you would like to see some hot sex this is not the right movie.

What I did not really understand is if the writer's wife knows what is happening and if she accepts that. I can understand sex without love, and sex can be very good even though love is missing in the equation (however, when you love the person, sex is 100x better, that's for sure) but I still struggle to understand people who pretend to love one person but have sex with another one (or more). Maybe I am still too much of a romantic.

All this to say the movie touches an interesting argument but is not inspired.

For those who are curious about the subject, sex, (free) love, orgasm... I advise you to watch Shortbus. This movie was shot in New York without a real story line and follows few couples in their quest for love and sex. You see explicit scenes but before you think it is just another excuse to show sex on the big screen, I would like to say that the movie is very poetic. It is a beautiful movie about our tormented souls! The scene of the old mayor of New York is very moving, touching. The song at the end of the movie is beautiful. I usually talk only of movie that are in theaters when I write, but Shortbus is something to see, a very nice movie that shows sex but talks about souls! Much better than la fille coupee en deux.
