If you like running you should join GVA Runners. It's a good workout and they run every Monday and Wednesday from 7pm at Bain de Paquis in the centre of town. Loads of people who are new, like you and I. See you at the run.

For running, it can depend on how serious you are.  There are Geneva runners who seem to start in the same place each time and there is the hash house harriers who combine drinking and running.

Originally it was a drinking group with a running a problem but it is beginning to evolve into a running group with a drinking problem.

The advantage is that it starts in different places each time and so you really get to know the canton and France Voisine. Runs are between 7-12 km  with a beer stop 3/4 of the way round

Tends to be expat rather than Swiss/French and plenty of nationalities

For climbing - depends what you want to do. Now is mainly indoors but both the Club Alpin Suisse (Geneva and Carouge) having climbing wall sessions once a week but prefer members who are going to stay more than just a year. The Amis montagnards have their own climbing wall in a disused church. All three clubs climb and do alpinism in the summer plus ski touring yand snow shoeing in winter.  There are also several sections of the Club Alpin Francais not far from Geneva
