Arriving in July

Jambo Sana to all. I will be arriving in Geneva on the 1st of July after two years in Nairobi (previously five years in New Delhi, and three years in Dakar) with UNICEF, any helpful advice on how to survive the modern world of Geneva would be gratefully received. Also, for those in the know, any suggestions on preferred residential areas and decent secondary schools would be most helpful.

I am very much into percussion and particularly tribal drums (e.g Djembe) does anyone know of any drum circles in the Geneva area, or will I have to start my own?

Jambo. Check with the Tourist Office in Ferney Voltaire, in neighbouring France. I think someone gives djembe classes there.

There is an ethno-musical association in the Grottes area that teaches Djembe and some various African dance claases given by africans with Djembe players ( I did one of these a few years ago), but they would have to be looked for when you are here.. I no longer have the detaild, sorry.

Hello, Mark:

Just a couple of words, if I may, to the wise.

If you are thinking of playing your drums at home, choose your accommodation with care because I wouldn’t recommend an upmarket apartment block in down-town Geneva.

As for schools, if you can afford private education, the criteria will be availability of admission for the age-group concerned, plus proximity to home and work. There are several “international” schools in Geneva, nearby Vaud and neighbouring France and plenty of glocalers who will be happy to share their experiences.

However, in Geneva’s state schools you don’t have freedom of choice. In other words, you find accommodation and the local authority then decides where your child/children will be enrolled. Here, again, other members will certainly share their know-how and others again who live in nearby Vaud or neighbouring France.

Extremely sound advice Richie... Most of which I have gathered already but still, most appreciated... We are even at this early stage finding it difficult to place the children! Thanks for taking the time to offer your wisdom and knowledge... cheers
