Aussie, new to Lausanne

Hello,

I'm an 27 year old Australian from the lovely town of Canberra, recently moved to Lausanne for an 18 month posting. I'm living in a share flat near Cafe de Grancy with a collection of various nationalities but it is good to have a broader network for socalising than just your housemates. The world cup has been good for meeting some fellow Australians in Lausanne, who put me onto this site.

I'm looking forward to learning French (currently almost none) and travelling the continent on weekends.

I'm interested in hiking and cycling for the outdoorsly lifestyle and will try to improve my skiing in the winter (I ski on the principle that enthasiasim can make up for a lack of technique... which can cause trouble). I'm also fairly keen on boardgames, across the gammet of types (excluding Diplomacy... that game causes trouble)

Enough rambling.

Keen to meet you.

Hi James - welcome to Lausanne - you'll love it, especially being in Grancy.

All the activities I organise are open to all ages, genders, nationalities - there are no rules, except to have fun and meet new people (well, except for the golden rule - if you sign up, turn up!).

I usually organise a cinema night most Tuesdays and some hikes, for fit hikers, most weekends.  You're more than welcome to come along and it's a much better way to get to know people than hanging around in bars (although we do that as well!)

And there's nearly always someone from EPFL tagging along, which could open up your network at work.

All you have to do is sign up Cool

Hi James

Welcome to Switzerland! You have two fellow Canberrans just up the road here in Geneva - but the important question is northside or southside?! We are from Calwell.

I hope you settle in quickly and are happy here. The travel opportunities are amazing, and the Glocals activities are a great place to start making new friends. for what it's worth, take my advice - avoid looking for the Aussies, and expand your horizons by making friends with people from lots of different countries. We have made a heap of new friends through Glocals and have a very busy social life on the weekends we are not travelling.

Hi !

I am in the same situation as James - or kind of ! I am a French student coming in Lausanne for an internship, and I live between Grancy and the train station, even if my room is temporary and I am still looking for a place to live for september, which seems to be very hard to find !

I am there for a short period but I would like to meet new people and discover Lausanne city and areas as much as possible, and right now, except my lovely colleagues at work, I did not have the opportunity to meet other people.

I am found of sports and outdoor activities as well as literature and culture through cinema, theater or art.

I am looking to meet new people and do new stuff so if you organize some activities, just let me know I would be glad to join you !

And if by the way some of you have some good plans to find an accomodation or know someone looking for a roommate I would be so greetful for the help !

Thank you very much,

Hoping to meet you one day,

Marion

I think this thread only goes to show that no matter where you go in the world, there is no escape from Canberra. Weston Creek here Wink

E.T., Canberra and Geneva are similar no? Everyone knows everyone, you can find your way around easily, and you are either from one side of the lake or the other and never the twain shall meet!

maybe we should plan a Canberra reunion activity!

Thanks for the welcomes!

I was a bit of a inner north snob in Canberra (a hangover from uni days). I made a trip up to Gevena last weekend and yeah, it did have a bit of a Canberra vibe. At least I found a place that did a good flat white.

Geneva seems like you have to be a local to know the good haunts, and I will be going through there on my explorations around Europe (via Easyjet) so I will definatly hit up some local advice while I'm there.

James,

You must have found the fantastic Boreal coffee shop if you managed to get a good flat white. There are two, a small one near Gare Cornavin, and the bigger trendy one on rue du Stand. Owned by Aussies, best coffee in Geneva and free wifi.

G'day James!

Nice to meet you, I'm an aussie from the glamourous town of Townsville (North Queensland) but I grew up in Melbourne so that should make up for it.

I've been here for the past 5 years and I've done my fair share of weekend trips around Europe so I could give you some great tips! I have the same philosophy when it comes to skiing!

I've also managed to learn French (huge accomplishment for a kid from Townsville) and have a B2 level so I'd be more than happy to share tips on schools.

Send me a message if you want!

Cheers

Not to mention the Jet d'Eau, although Wikipedia reckons Canberra's fountain is higher!

I've found the Coffee Break French podcasts really helpful for beginner French, although given the presenter's accent in English I'm a bit concerned I may be learning to speak French with a Scottish accent Tongue Out
