Coming to Basel Skiing and Sailing
I`m moving to Basel at the beginning of July to start work with ISB (International School of Basel) and I`m really keen to start skiing and sailing regularly - does anyone know where people can go sailing in or around Basel.  Next question does anyone go skiing regularly in the winter months and if so is there a cheap way of goling about it - boot/ski hire/ pass etc?

Next question - Living in Brazil for the last 2 years without a car has really limited my enjoyment here as Sao Paulo can be a really claustrophobic city - so I was thinking that buying a car in Basel should be a priority.  Does anyone have any advice about this?

Sorry about all the questions!

Cheers

lots of questions, i lived in basel for a long time but am now in geneva, but dont panic, i can help.

definately dont buy a car, it will be more hassel than its worth, basel has one of the best public transport networks you will find and switzerland is also very good, trains and trams are so easy, and many still choose to cycle as well.

as for sailing and sking, location wise basel is the worst, but it is ok, switzerland is small so its easy to get to places.  and yes the trains are full at weekends people heading off to the mountains, everyone goes.  the slopes are around 3 hours away.

when you arrive to switzerland buy a half tax card, this lets you travel on all public transport for half price, in winter you can buy a ski and rail ticket which gives you discounted transport and lift pass to all the swiss resorts.

sailing, this will be on the lakes, probaably neuschatel or murten would be the best, but you will need to get a swiss sailing licence, which involves doing the course and exam in one of there languages, unless of course you know someone with one and can tag along.

basel is a great city, i really liked living there, you will enjoy it, and everything you have mentioned is easy to do,  it is all there for you, it becomes much clearer when you are actually here.  if you have anyother questions drop me a line.

Thanks for that...... I do actually have a bike here in Sao Paulo but I think it`d be cheaper buying another one than shipping it over as it was originally quite cheap.

Pity about the sailing as I`m not sure how likely I am to do their course in their language I`d probably end up killing myself!!

keep your eye out on this web site, they often advertise for people who want to sail, mainly down this way in geneva, but as i said its switzerland so its all close by.  i would prbably buy a bike here unless you have a really good one in sao palo.

where are you working isb?

No it's not that good, just a bog standard supermarket bike!!

I'm starting work in ISB in August but I'll be moving to Basel at the beginning of July.  How long have you been in Switzerland?

Hello,

Well I`ve finally arrived, thanks very much for your information.  Basel is great, I`m in a hotel until I move into my flat, but I`ve had great fun discovering the city.  When you`re back in Basel, perhaps we can get together for a coffee or perhaps a night out with the ISB group?

Take Care,

Emily

Sounds great about Swiss Day, is that when they have fireworks and a musical event by MarktPlatz?  I`m already going to go to something on the 31st July it must be this..... and then apparently there are fireworks up in Bruderholz on 1st August too.

Other than that, I`m having a great time here, my parents are coming up next week, and we`re going to Strasbourg wine tasting, going up the river, it`s got so many possibilities!!

Anyway, do let me know when you`re up next, it`ll be great to meet up.

yeah you want to be on the rhine for around 6 or 7 thats when it all starts, usually with a boat race and other things are going on, then its a huge fire works show and big party.

bruderholtz is ok, nothing like the main one on the river but worth a look if you have nothing else on.  be warned tho the swiss are a bit liberal with there health and safety when it comes to fireworks!

After that there will be a floating stage where every night in august they will have bands playing.  the end of the month klosterberg festival which is also good.
