Coming to Geneva from UK at end of August
Hi Everyone,

Looking for some quick advice before moving out at the end of this month.

Have been trying to look for a property for myself and my wife to rent and am soon realising how expensive Geneva is to rent (we are after a 3 bed house). Therefore, have looked at a few properties in France (St Julien, Sergy). However, for a new comer who can't speak French is this advisable if I want to enjoy everything geneva has to offer?

I notice a lot of activities take place in the centre and realise I would have to drive in to enjoy (meaning the alcohol consumption must be limited)!

Obviously it is different for different people so as a guide I am looking to get involved in sport clubs where possible (football, squash, tennis, snooker/pool, skiing etc) while also going out and enjoying fine wine and food and just generally socialising.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

I would suggest try to find somewhere in Geneva to begin with as you'll benefit from the local transport system and being able to get to restaurants and bars without the worry of parking and(or) drinking. Also most the people you'll want to meet will be in Geneva.

This will also give you an idea of what side of the lake in France you'd want to live, maybe nearer your new ski resort which you'll only discover having been here a while.

I spent two years in Geneva before moving over the border to France

Hi,

Good luck with the move - I did the UK to Geneva move in May and am now just finally settled!

I'm based in Geneva... but I know a few people who have found well priced 3 bedroom places (some with gardens) in Nyon which is in canton Vaud. There are a few benefits - the tax is cheaper, insurance etc is cheaper and its only about 25 minutes on the train to Geneva (last train about 12am). It might be worth looking into but I think Nyon is on the up as a few businesses are moving out there so the demand for accommodation will go through the roof.

Good luck and enjoy all that Geneva (and Glocals) has to offer.

if you decide to buy ,my friends are selling a villa in St Prex without an agency

as for Geneva it is very expensive and hard to find

I agree ,best is to go between Lausanne and Geneva if you decide to stay in CH
