Do I need a relocation agent?

I am moving from London to Geneva mid-August and whilst my company is putting me up for a month, I then need to find my own flat. I have heard so many negative things about how hard it is to find a flat and as it is just me moving, it is feeling a little daunting at the moment.

I know that I won't be able to really start looking until I move to Geneva in August but it would be good to hear whether it is worthwhile using a reolcation agent and what benefits they bring. Also any recommendations on good agents would be great.

I would also really welcome any advice on good areas to live. I will be working in the city centre near Rue du Rhone. Do send me a message if you know of a 1 bed flat that would be available from 18th August onwards. I am looking for a minimum of 6 months as this is a permanent move.

Any advice will be most welcome!

Hello Lucy,

I moved to Geneva a few years ago... Even with a relocation agent the move was quite a complicated one after my company had put me up for a month or so. I would highly recommend paying for one as they know all the "regies" (landlords) who control the housing situation here. I used Lodge relocation and they were great. I would recommend that you try to find something in central Geneva or near the UN.

Good luck and message me if you need.

This isn't exactly a fully comprehensive view or opinion of everyone living in Geneva. My relocation was cheaper, plus I don't have a studio I have an apartment in the city centre for a good rate. I would give the relocation companies a try and I would also search 'regies in geneva' on a search engine to check listings for flats out. Obviously I would look at the classified section on this site also ;)

Try looking in General Forum anibis.ch, but very very aware their are frauds/thiefs. So never transfer any money unless it is a legitimate company and contrat called 'Bail a Loyer' that has a cantonal notary stamp/timbre.

Christopher is corrrect, and the that post, is crap. Anyone that says 'I dont liek the place already' and before they arrive, in my view, they can just go back home, where the 'grass is greener'. hehahahaha

but truth is , august is summer time and peak season, really going to be difficult to find something decent, I could just suggest get a temporary accomodation, then once your 'on the ground' you can then spend time to visit places. Once you find something that you can 'accept' then take it ASAP, or next day it will be gone. Make a Basic needs list, and a 'Wish list'.

But I certainly woudl not suggest paying yourself to get a relocation company, they are really expensive.

Thanks for all the advice. Dave G I think that your advice about finding some temporary accomdation is a good idea. I have somewhere for a month but may see if I can extend it in the event that I don't find somewhere.
