GENEVA! Please let us in!!!! Young couple with soon baby need help!

Hey,

We are a couple from Germany, just engaged, and our first baby is on the way... - now we moved to Geneva and currently live at a friends place. We are looking everyday for an apartment in Geneva center and applied for docents... no luck. All that counts is money and status. Well, I am an educated lawyer and banker and now a Ph.D. student at the IHEID - my fiancé is an educated teacher. But we will have no income in the months to come, because I have a scholarship. Before I take a job, I would like to settle in Geneva and start my research. Savings are enough to live well in the first year, together with the scholarship. We are secure and even offer a guarantor and an account fixed for the rent of the first year... all is possible to negotiate, but not our missing employment....

So we search and search and print flyers and more... The text sounds as follows:

Couple serious cherche une appartement 3,5-5 pièce! Récompenser!

Couple d'Allemand, académique cherche appartement de 3,5 à 5 pièces à Genève centre! Plainpalais, CArouge, Eaux-Vive, Grotte. Balcon si possible. Vielle appartement. Renovation possible. Fr. 2'400-. max.; libre de suite! Offre Fr. 2'000.- a récompenser si réussit! Email: [email protected], 0774010127

The same counts for all the members here. So if somebody knows somebody who knows somebody who leaves his apartment, please let us know!

Then we might be able to join some of the superb events Glocals is offering... hopefully soon!

Thanks for your time and help,

Matthias

To my knowledge 2400 CHF isn't a lot of money for what you are asking..

Check offers of immobiliers with your wishes and see what price comes out. Just "google" immobilier geneve. And I also believe the bail is standard 3 months of rent.

Youll be VERY lucky to find a nice place of 90m2 and 2 bedrooms for 2000 to 2400 pcm... welcome to the second most expensive city in the world after Moscow.

Thanks!!! We already check anything we can get - we established a system that helps us to scan most of the sources... ;-)

And sure - there are a lot of those places in our price range... - but in the hands of agencies... - private ones are sometimes even cheeper but rarely on the market - they change the owner before...

We will try on!

Merci!

Actually Geneva is no 9, Tokyo continues to lead at no 1 and Moscow is no 15.

Not that I find Geneva cheap, but to put things in perspective. Charlie, I think you owe me a beer?

Matthias, looks like your best bet is to subrent from somebody or rent directly from the owner. Watch the ads on glocals for both scenarios. Renting the normal way through a regie is not realistic in your case, for the reasons that yourself you list. Sorry to spoil the fun but I least you can channel your energy better.

Have you thought at all about finding a place outside Geneva -- in France, for example, where rental prices are much less? You could find somewhere that has a good public transportation connection to Geneva and perhaps end your very difficult search. Good luck.

I agree.

You cannot realistically get a 3-5 room apartment in Geneva for that amount. Also, in Geneva, the kitchen counts as a room, unlike in most of Europe and nearby France.

If you really need all that space and only have the specified amount, you need to look closely at France or farther out in Switzerland. In a pinch, you can even live at a hotel for 49€/room/night (in Ferney-Voltaire, near the airport tunnel customs, 500m from Switzerland). A hotel room in France works out to less than many apartments in Geneva and is definitely more flexible.

Most improbable that one, assuming no "premium connections", can rent anything without all the paperwork in place, specifically double-signed work contract and recent payslips. Unknown, whether third-party guarantees will count. This assuming you will even be considered among the 20-40 other interested people, who have the paperwork. You can, of course, be very lucky, which I hope will be the case.

Good search and good luck,

FerneyL
