Hi! New PhD student in Geneva

Hello everyone, I'm a British student moving to Geneva this Summer to start a PhD at Geneva university. I'll be in Geneva from August onwards and am keen to meet lots of new people as quickly as possible. I'll hopefully meet some of you through the organised activities on here and if anyone else is new (or old) and fancies a meet up/drink then let me know.

On another note, I'm slightly terrified by the accommodation situation (or lack of it). Ideally I'm looking for a flatshare with some other people at a student friendly price from October onwards. If anyone is looking for a housemate or has any helpful advice that would be great.

See you soon!

Hello, same here!  What is your field?  Are you with the Graduate Institute or Univ of Geneva proper?  Have you sorted out your student visa?  I haven't and am considering the possibility of starting my study without having a study visa yet.

Hi Kalok,

My PhD is in physics (quantum information theory to be precise) at Geneva university. What will you be studying? The secretary in Geneva is applying for a work permit visa for me which should be ready by the time I start the PhD in October. I thought the university would have to apply on your behalf?

Thanks Joe, I guess scientists are a bit different than us and you get to work in the laboratory as part of your degree, right?  That's why you need a work permit.  I am really just a law student (international humanitarian law) so will need to apply for my own study visa.  Is your work somewhat related to that big experiment in Geneva on the God's particle?
