Hola, Salut, Ciao - Arrived in Lausanne three weeks ago, hopefully here for the long-haul
Hello all

I've decided to leave behind London for a while and come and work in Switzerland. I'm living and working in Lausanne, staying with friends at the moment (finding a place is ... dishearteningly tricky).

Looking forward to meeting some fellow expats around this area or in Geneva (can't decide whether to commute or stay here in Lausanne at the moment).

I luckily caught the last of the summer evenings here - now in that limbo period before the season starts (whereupon I expect lots of friends will suddenly be missing me and want to come and stay, but catch some snow while they're here of course).

Just getting my bearings of the city at the moment, Flon is my zoning point, but hopefully will discover some more tucked-away locations.

George

 Hi there,

Getting a place is never easy around here, it works better if you ask around...

So how's Lausanne treating you so far? I like the city, thought of moving a year or so but never got round to it and my office is in Montreux so it's easier not to commute (I just like my extra half an hour of sleep in the morning!). But I do like to come to Lausanne to see friends and I am up for snowboarding when the season comes...

Good luck with the appartment hunt! (In Geneva it is even worse than in Lausanne...)

Hi Jenni, Yes I checked out Cook's, for a quiet Sunday evening, met
some Brit blokes there...and I'm afraid I can't remember much more of
anything. It was a quality evening but also highly embarassing - I do
not make a habit of getting stupid drunk with people I've just met!

I've been incredibly lucky and found an apartment in Ouchy, which is
the area I dreamt of living in before I got here. It might only be for
a few months but I'm still so happy to have somewhere of my own - I'm
not very good at living out of a bag, although very grateful to the
friends who put me up.

Maria, coffee sounds lovely, I am building a little portfolio of places
to eat and drink so when friends come to stay I can at least appear to
have wandered outside tourist-central and the ten-minute walk along the
lake to my office! Will PM you.

Ekaterina, a friend of mine has just moved to the mountains nr Montreux
and says there is snow around already! I came over for a few days in
the summer and saw some of the festival (but not enough).

Need to buy a snowboard, boots and bindings asap. Friends at work are
starting to go every weekend and I already feel like I'm missing out :)

Thanks for your messages, take care all

 Hi there,

Good stuff with the appartment, not everyone gets so lucky :)

Where do ur colleagues go to snowboard now? The "official" ski season hasn't started yet...

You should come over to Montreux for the Christmas market - it starts on the 26th of Nov and ends on the Xmas eve. The Jazz and Xmas market times are about the only times when Montreux is actually lively and full of people :)

Cheers,
Kat

I think they have been going to Verbiers, but I also get the impression they are much more advanced than me, apparently there are some people working here who do helicopter drop-offs! Crazy, but oh so cool. One day, maybe :)

Thank you for the recommendation about the market. I will be sure to check that out. Last weekend I went to Lavez les bains - has anyone else here ever been there? It was superb, we spent hours there, got to see it in daytime and at night. Good value for money and less than an hour on the train from Lausanne (even closer for you in Montreux Kat!).

Sounds like it's all going on in Montreux anyway, I will definitely make a date to visit!

take care all
