Intern in Geneva: Deciding whether to bring the family or not?

Hello all!

I will be in Geneva this summer working as a Global Health intern. I am married with four children. My husband grew up in the Appenzel area of Switzerland. Hence, we would love to travel as a family to Geneva this summer for our children to experience a little of their father's heritage. However, we are struggling to find affordable housing options for the three months that I will be an intern (June - August roughly).

Would love your advice. We hear it is cheaper to live in France, but I don't really understand where in France. Hoping to find somewhere that would fit our needs for less than 2000 Euros/month. Haven't seen much.

If we can't find family housing, I will come alone for the needed time.

Hi Liz,

If you'll be working in Nations area, then living in Ferny Voltaire or Gex, both in France, are less expensive than Geneva. The commute is not too bad and both places are family friendly.

In Geneva, Meryrin (near the airport) tends to be less expensive than  central geneva.

There are a few people subrenting in Geneva too, which can be easier in the beggining, as the rental agencies here are very picky and the demand for flats is super high.

Good luck!

Hi,

It is cheaper in France, you could maybe look in annemasse if you have a car -  i hear the commute is difficult on public transport.  Otherwise there are the smaller villages just over the boarder like fearny-voltaire or St Genis.

If you can find somewhere i would definitely recommend it, aside from the history and the mountains (which are great in summer)  there is the Fete de Geneve throughout summer with loads of activites and exciting things for kids so they will have a great time

Thanks for the recommendations of particular cities in France. This definitely helps narrow the search.

We will focus our search on these small villages. I hope it works out, as I do think my family would enjoy the opportunity (even if it is a little hard on the wallet)!

If it's only three months, I'd not bother with rentals, but would go for a hotel (from 50EUR/day) or apartment hotel, both present in Ferney Voltaire.
