There's already been a thread 'Is Geneva boring'?, and I think most people agreed that it is. But calling Switzerland boring is absurd.

I agree, but then I've been here a long time. Perhaps it's not the same if you've just arrived or live outside of Zurich?

There are so many things to do in Geneva and nearby. Go hiking, climbing, sailing, rowing, cycling. There are lots of theatres, music and cinema festivals. I could not imagine why someone would call Geneva "boring". They might be bored by any place.

I agree that things are not always easy and often expensive. But that is a different story.

Point taken, but those are all outdoor activities, and we can see from your photo that you're into those. What about the cultural/entertainment scene? Are you happy with that? And what about other cities that you've visited?

well, if you compare it with st.helena island's ( the one in the middle of the atlantic ocean) social and nigth life, here is ok....with the rest of the inhabited world...not that sure ; )

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.. for me Switzerland  is boring and I think most people agreed that it is.  Perhaps it's not the same if  you are use to living or work in  big cities... for me i travel to London every weekend ..

There's certainly mixed feelings about this issue.

I don't think that is a swiss problem... But for sure a Geneva's problem! If you compare to Zurich is like another world... If you compare with the Lausanne night life is also an another world. When you see the ex boss of "Genève tourisme" who said " Geneva is superficial, expensive and boring city" I think is a good resume. I born here I agree 200% that is one the most boring city in Switzerland. During the 80's it was a bit better but now my god... Few reasons : too much international city... is nice for big cities but with a village like Geneva it dont work and Geneva lost spirit for long time. After that you add frontaliers and pendulaires who leave the city after work day, about 100 000 people. And for finish swiss people not really open mind and who like to stay home. The result is : small superficial and boring international city... Anyway, welcome :-)

well...I live in zurich and it may be a little bit better (in comparison to geneva...of course) , especially if you like +60/70 y.old girls and empty discos... ! But as one swiss friend told me, there are plenty of "perfect girls" 90-60-45 in here! haha

This discussion just goes on and on doesn't it? Didnt' you guys read the last thread some weeks back about people complaining about it being boring? I'm new to glocals and this is already a recurring theme in two months. Geeze, this discussion is even getting... boring! Maybe the glocals admins can even tell us how often this theme has appeared in the forums since they started...

I suggest doing the following study. We make an anonymous survey of all Glocals members where you add your net salary and your rating of Geneva as boring or not on a scale of 1 to 10. Other data like where you are from and what are your interests might be interesting too. In any case I'm willing to bet we find a nice linear relationship, the more you get paid, the more you love to complain and more you find it boring. Just seems like a theme of human nature to me... maybe it's boring to you becase you moved here to make money and not because you like the Alps, the lake, the nature and everything else Geneva has to offer?

During the 8 years i'm here, Geneva has been getting cleaner (but NOT safer), more high-class, and guess what folks... more boring. I've seen good alternative night life places like Artemis and Rhino close down, and seems more and more fancy bars and clubs where you can go and meet expats in suits with often what seem to be call-girls at their sides. And they never stop complaining do they? Hmmm... I can understand why the real locals keep to themselves... making the city even more... .shit! BORING! Maybe we should stop complaining?

Well, i don't know. Since many of you like to rant, i figure i'll join in too. It's surely a popular theme around these parts... that's why i suggest we make a study out of it! This should be easy to do on Doodle. Anyone else think this is an interesting idea?

Switzerland is so boring that there are no tourists at all - well may be some being on transit from Italy to Germany or from Austria to France.

The landscape is so annoying. Everywhere you will find those obstructive mountains and lakes. Why couldn't they just create Switzerland as a flat square? Swiss culture is also quite boring. People speak 4 different languages here - why can't they just all speak English? Why can't every city just look the same.

Especially in Geneva you rarely encounter tourists. Tourists would never go to the boring city of Geneva. However some tourists visiting France get lost and end up in Geneva - tourists that intended to visit the exciting cities Annemasse or Ferney.

I must confess - now I am convinced that Switzerland and especially Geneva are the most boring places on earth

maybe some of them get the flights wrong when heading off to genoa and get stuck here? once they've landed they get so incredibly bored that they can't actually manage to book a flight back as they can only just sit there... staring at the boring people, in the boring city, getting irreversibly more and more bored..

Geneva & Switzerland are made even more boring by expats who, complain about it on a site whose prime focus I guess, is to reduce boredom among expats.

Actually there are plenty of amazing things to do in my experience, it's just difficult to find them. Perhaps something like this might be an interesting option to relieve the ennui and also a potential Glocals event? I know it would challenge me. Just throwing it out there . . .

I'd say there's a lot of things to do around like it has been mentioned (hiking, skiing, kite surfing, diving...)...The nightlife is pretty boring (apart from Zurich), but mostly, and this is my deep conviction here after having lived in many countries: people stick to the same groups and seem to be kind of narrow-minded...Not trying to make a general statement here, but from my experience, it's been the hardest place to meet knew people.

Bremtane, it's clear that CH is amazing for outdoor activities. Other stuff? Could it be better? Do we know what's really going on?

I'd say most of the things I'm seeing around are organized by internationals (i.e. via glocals or similar). You'll probably meet locals but their groups don't usually expand :)

I like your approach Mark. You know, as an expat, I just have to adapt to the local mentality. I'd just say that a place is as exciting as the people within, i.e. if people open up a bit more to others, we'd be able to do more, and I don't mean just amongst expats.

I grew up on an Island (Hawaii) and for me to even hear "is Switzerland boring?" well it just cracks me up.

I find Switzerland as an Island in the middle of Europe, and it does have some of the same Isolation / individualism of Island mentality

but It is by far easier to crack then Hawaii for an outsider (even from nearby California.

I am not sure about Switzerland, but Geneva is an ugly, badly managed city. Train station is disgusting, the airports it recalls you that you are arriving in a town made of banks,and watches. You have la police municipale fining cars that have no macarons, but when it come to a porche or ferrari you can even park in the middle of the road. Cycle paths are ridicolous, Expat hang on with expat, while the locals greet you with a smile, but basically they can care less of who you are.

All in all Geneva is a joke, good if you like aoutdoor activities, but anything else, just dump it!!!

Myself, I also live in Switzerland already 14 years. The country offers a lot from Cultural events, via Sports and Nature, to Relax possibilities and much more.... People who feel bored here - they will be bored anywhere in the world :-) ... Complaining is easier than organizing your daily life and participating the huge number of possibilites that we have in Switzerland ....

Those who are curious and like exploring, are interested in many things, they never feel bored even if they land at a lonely island they will make out of it a great time. People who are not curious and not creative, not willing to explore and experience - they are bored always, no matter where you put them :-)))))

I don't know why you cannot accept Switzerland is boring: even the Swiss people I know will tell you that.

But I don't mind living in this country because everything is working fine here and the absence of problems probably contributes to make the country boring.

This country is managed to be a place for wealthy people, accomodating refuges in barracks by the runway of airports. I have only lived here a short while and I have already heard plenty of people complaining about how boring it is. I would like to ask the question - What constitutes fun? No one who has written about Geneva being boring has mentioned what fun actually constitutes apart from a vague mention of a lack of culture and lack of open people. What do other cities of 200,000 people offer that is so much better than here? I don't think it is realistic to expect that Geneva will be like London, Berlin or Paris in terms of the number of options for nightlife, theatre etc. But it is also not like them in terms of traffic, commute to work or crowded streets either. Having just moved from Sydney (a city of 4 million), I think there is plenty to do (Shakespeare by the lake, drinks on a wednesday night, billiards, lake side parties, not to mention any of the fabulous outdoor options). I have also found Swiss people interesting, funny and welcoming in all my visits to Switzerland. The glocals forum makes it so easy for anyone to organise fun things to do, maybe we should all start to be a little more proactive and as the saying goes "be the change you wish to see in the world" by starting with Geneva.

I wanted to add my opinion to this conversation. I have been to Geneva and I stayed there for three months, it was truely a great experience. Good people, with alot of diversification regarding industries and occupations. The atmosphere was always positive and you really enjoyed yourself. The people would come to you and have a conversation. Lusanne had a very bohemmian element to it, more creative and free spirited. These were the French parts.

I am now in Zurich, I am getting used to the disciplined lifestyle and regimentation. There seems to be a detachment among the people who live here. Yes it is the financial center of Switzerland, but that does not mean that you cannot have fun. You have to work harder to break down the people here. Maybe it is me, but it seems to be if you are a banker or a Investment fund manager, you will like this place. Or it could just be a German influence. Basel and Bern seem to be different to Zurich. Not so detached. I may be totally wrong and it could just be me. But I would prefer Geneva to Zurich.

I say what I think regardeless, whether I am "hosted" or looking at things from outside, and if you cannot live with it, that it is your problem

you hit the nail on the head....and that's the sad part...My view, people stay here, mainly, just because of the "bloody money" . However, as I have seen in many cases, after some years (turning point between year 6 to 10 for many expats) money becomes irrelevant or better said less relevant and many people/families leave to somewhere else. And not only because here is "boring and frustrating" (declared in this forum ; ) ) but also due to the big brother/ finger poinitng attitude of this society...anyway...I guess it is just another cultural difference that either one takes it of leave it...

He isn't necessarily wrong he just disagrees with you, and he is entitled to his opinions and to express them without being reprimanded like a small child. Switzerland is very democratic and it prides itself on allowing freedom of speech!

And salary has absolutely nothing to do with this subject whatsoever. Also do not presume to know how much money people earn. Not everyone that lives in Switzerland earns a high salary!

I have no idea why people on this site have such an issue with accepting that different people have different views and enjoy different things in life. Just because person A loves Geneva doesn't mean person B has to as well.

Firstable in any country i would ever live..because its my choice...i would be thankful for the possibility ..learn the language the people speak, explore everything..anywhere and its is ALWAYS and ALWAYS up to you to feel bored about something or not...just not booring people..will never feel bored...so the people make it...always...did you ever go to a swiss festival outside of Zürich where most only locals..try it out...you might have fun :-) well they are million things to have fun here or outside.. but the point i like to tell...in any country i would ever live...because of my choise..i would NEVER have the right to say i found this country boring....this is cery unpolite to teh country you stay and live..and propobly not very usful to get in contact with the swiss and have fun...YES i do take it personaly..if peopel say that swiss and swiss people are boring..because i am part of it. and for everyone ...i am sorry if anyone lives in a place..but does not like it, feel bored..realy sorry...you should think over your life ..because every day is worth be be where we want to be...realy if you dont wont do be here..please go..we have a wonderful place here..i love...and how you can ever feel bored with something you love??? if you dont love, yes..and again then you are in wrong place..

salary has nothing to do with this discussion, and I am not in Switzerland because of that. It seems because Switzerland comes first in the UBS quality of life score we all have to be happy with it.

fun, and things to do, that is what most people seems to be bothered about. A place is or isn't boring depending of what it offers, but there is no question what so ever about,  how it is offered, at what cost, to who is available, and most of all how friendly and lay back is that offer.

I do not express what I think, as it seems some people takes it personally, neither I make comparison with other countries, as that would be unfair..

People are in Switzerland because it offers a comfortable way of living, which is difficult to find somewhere else, but is life all about being comfortable?

I might have deviated from the original question, however the question whether a country is boring or not, cannot be answered without touching on economics and politics of course. In fact what makes this countries boring, at the end is not the people, but more a backwards way of living that does not provide a great deal of quality to life in general. Full stop! personally I don't care to gather people agreeing with with, I am not here to search for glory!

Just open your eyes and you will see that things aren't wonderfull just because they look nice. It is the inside that is questionable, and often really stincks in this country, and of course like in many others inclusive Italy

I'm not voicing a personal opinion of the "boring or not boring" debate. But the recent posts are some of the most useless I've seen, on 2 fronts:

1. Being bored in Geneva or not being bored in Geneva is subjective to each person cos each person looks for different things. Yet folks here "provide proof" to others the place is not boring. Won't work guys. You might as well try to convince someone that food X tastes good, when this person doesn't like food X. 

2. People here got attacked for saing they don't like Geneva / CH, and were told they're "offending their home country by saying that". That's crazy. CH is a country that champions different opnions and different voices, and if someone doesn't like CH and says it then it's no big deal or reason to think they crosses some line.

Switzerland: The most boring country during peace time. The best place in wait out a world war. Unless you're a Jew. But thats normally the case in any country.

Having said that, I do like Suisse and the fact I can run at night safely (although I've never had a problem with that in any other country). I met my guy here and certainly thats enough to compliment the country.

However, unless you're well off, its far too expensive to fully enjoy. And while its all good and easy to snap back, 'Go hiking/camping/mountain lake swimming', most of the fun outdoor activities require a train ticket or all day bus pass to said outdoor activity. Both of which are a fair expense for the many unpaid interns who, often anonymously, populate this city and most of your offices.  

The diversity of the people here and all the interesting stories you can hear from a stranger in a bar is one major bonus of this city that is unmatched in many places. 

Boring question. If you think Switzerland is boring that's only because everything runs so smoothly. 

that's right! One can be bored to do something that is very amusing for someone else. So what about asking:

Is Switzerland an exciting and stimulating envinronment, maybe by twisting the question around the debate could trigger more interesting thoughts

Michael, Conny  and all the rest who appreciate and know how to enjoy what life offers us - as you see from the whole thread, it is useless to invest time in explaining some members, how to discover and enjoy life no matter where they are :-))) . You can only laugh over individuals with such destructive, unsatisfied and incompetent comments. Just feel sorry and a pity for people who seem to be frustrated with their place and way of living. But you cannot help them, as such people do not have the talent to discover and explore and enjoy, they are just able to make destructive critics even about things and facts that they did not make an effort to try and understand. Keep on smiling and being happy. Ignore the rest - as I wrote already, such people will always stay unsatisfied as they will be unhappy;  no matter where you place them - no matter if on a lonely island, in Zürich or Geneva, New York, in the jungle  or in the middle of a big party dance floor :-) . Only boring individs feel bored - the problem comes from themselves inside and not from the surrounding area. Having the talent of making amazing and fastinating experieneces out of simple things and being able to feel happy and to discover no matter where you are,  is not given to each human being :-)))) .... Keep on smiling, dancing and exploring .....  :-P ! Appreciate what you have now and the moment today, cause tomorrow you may not have it anymore; if you feel uncomfortable then do your best to improve the situation instead of spreading only negativ useless passiv complaints. It is YOU and YOURSELF who is responsible for your own happiness and do not blame the environment or people around you  .... That is all.

Similar to what Nir said....whether or not you are bored, depends on many things. Firstly where you live. If you live in a tiny village, where you don't speak the language, and the only shop in the village is open for 4 hours a day, then yes, I could see this as potentially being boring. Secondly, being bored depends on who you are as a person, and what you are looking for out of life.

For example,I have a few friends who love outdoor sports, hiking, climbing, walking, paragliding, skiing etc etc. So every weekend nearly they will disappear off into the mountains to do one of the above. They love switzerland. I know another person who is a avid photographer, and she disappears most weekends to wherever to take photos of landscapes. She also loves switzerland. I do on another note know of people who only want to party, live in a small town out of the way, and don't have very well paying jobs, and are bored stiff.

Myself personally, I think switzerland as a whole has a lot to offer. I have been here for just over a year now, and love this country. I am not especially outdoorsy, or especially a party animal, somewhere in the middle, but I enjoy meeting new people, and having a BBQ in the summer, or going on an easy walk in the winter, and building snowmen or something silly like that. it does depend on what you want out of life, and how far you will go to achieve that. If you want a party life, then move to somewhere like London or Berlin, if you want an outdoorsey life, then Switzerland is great! :)

I totally agree with Esperanza! There is not such thing as a boring party... It is oneself that is boring. If people can't enjoy themselves in a place as diverse as Geneva, well....

Seem to reopened the can of worms from a previous thread I believe? Apologies for that, I wasn't actively taking part then and didn't spot it. Still the issue does seem to have legs, if that isn't a mixed metaphor.

Meantime, after spending some time in Geneva and in other parts of the country, my issue isn't that Switzerland is boring - there is a lot going on for its size - it's how to find out about it.

I generally have to do a lot of trawling through various tourist office sites, newspapers or other vehicles. Do you guys have the same problem?

Finding things to do is easy, at least for me. I look at various websites and find inspiration for my next via ferrata trip. I post it as an event on Glocals and then I see who else is interested in coming along. 

I'm not going to wait for people to organise things I'm interested in. I'm going to take the opposite approach. So far it has worked. 

I'm boring in a bar. In the mountains I'm not. :-)

My point was that while this city might not be hopping with excitement any night of the week, like, say Barcelona, its a great place to be during a world war. Just look at how the Swiss were able to dissuade the Nazis from attacking, through military defense funds skyrocketing, skillful diplomacy, and increased banking with international parties. Genius!

The Swiss treatment of Jews during WWII is clearly documented, so no need to turn this into a political thread. Check out the Bergier Report to see how the Swiss themselves have recorded and interpreted their actions during that time. There is a reason why major Swiss bank websites have a page somewhere on their site which explains what the bank was up to during those turbulent times and how they have rectified their policies so such abuses won't happen again.

Finding out how the Swiss behaved during the WWII, the good and bad, is one way a history geek has fun in Suisse ;)

BTW, I do not compare Switzerland with any other country, beside this is not a country that can be compared, too outstanding, too unique, too fragmented, too small, too mixed. Switzerland does not even account to be a country, it is more a safe territory, a kind of dreamland, a country for selected refugees, too stable, too neutral, and still providing mercenary army to the Vatican.

I don't care about Switzerland, I care about mountains especially when they are not managed by an army of good looking mountain guides, especially when they are not reduced to a circus of cable carries.

I will certainly buy you a beer, and talk with you about anything you like, and if it is going to be about India, then even better, at least we will have something interesting to say about humanity.

You can tell from the way I talk that I am disappointed about living in Switzerland, and I do not understand nationalisms, people raising flags like if that should mean anything to me foreign, expat or whatever they want to call me.

I am not impressed by a beautiful landscape in Switzerland and that is beacause I am impressed by any landscape, and for some reason I love industrial estates, and that because they are the true reflection of what is our human condition. The nice villages on the Alps with the geranium pending from the balconies and the very clean little alleys are not. I leave that stuff to tourists that come here in search of fake beauty. I need the truth, I love the slums of Mumbay, or the outskirt of Naples, the industrial plants where workers make their living, and I do not like Geneva, the parade of expensive cars around the lake, and the fake people spending fake money in expensive bars.

That's it, this is my opinion, if some of the people here cannot respect it, its their problem, personally I respect any opinion.

This is the worst topic I have ever seen thru glocals but people are motivated to speak about this topic. I am tired after three months to read about that subject....

I can only say that if you are stuck in this called - boring country, I hope you can look at yourself in the mirror, by telling you, Ok I am stuck here but I have tried to learn french or german depending if you live in Geneva area or Zurich area. I have tried to integrate, I have tried to make friends with swiss people, and if after two, three years if everything  still sucks and you have tried everything you could to make it work, you just find a better place that suits you ....  but don't stay here for the high salary, it is better to be happy then well paid

Now that we're beer friends, Psst: Let me let you in on a secret (in italics, so that the Anglais speakin' expats don't understand). There exist run-down, broken places in Geneva also. One of them is called Les Grottes...where there are a few events once in a while. Squat parties happen all over...especially L'Usine, Corner 25 & sometimes, Weetamix and some truly squat places.

The outrageously expensive Paleo festival has a free for all music scene in its camping, sometimes there are raves, mostly in Swiss-German cantons...but many around Lugano, Ticino areas and if & when we're lucky in the forests near Lausanne too.

There are a few colourful quartiers in Geneva, of which the Swiss may not be really proud...and so, they won't tell you about it. Don't ask me where they are...I live around Annemasse, which is known to be vibrant & international by itself.

I respect your opinions but at the same time, I'm yet to find one Swiss guy who wants to show me his Rolex or Longines while many folks of various other nationalities show them off all around Cote d'Azur. All while talking about their designed in California (by Indians), made in China boats they want to take me on a tour of, just to show themselves off.

Well, it's a different idea of personal space around here and I appreciate their sense of privacy. Back in India, one has to answer questions like So, are you married? Why are you married (or not)? Do you have children? from perfect strangers, just because you travel with them. I derive happiness out of that too.

For that - is another world. I can't look for that world here. And I'd be stupid to look for this world - there. They are both boringly interesting.

PS: @Michael - The Legal Processing jobs are in Mumbai. The IT jobs are usually around Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad & Gurgaon. :)

Ofcourse we wont use that money for research but have one big expensive party, maybe even fly in some Playmates!

After that, when we are out of money, we go back to being bored as this is a horrible country and our total lack of fantasy is not helping us at all.

Ah and Swiss people, French speakers, like me, are ok to speak English at work but when they go out at night, they would like to speak French time to time. In 2009 - 2010, I have noticed that I was speaking more English in my daily life and at work than French. Is it normal ?!? No !!! And most of my swiss friends are running away from expatriate group because they would like to spend the night speaking French and have a good laugh !!! Imagine being in your country force to speak a foreign language all year long?!? Wouldn't you get tired and try to gather with people speaking the same language than you ? And com'on French is not that difficult to learn, my boyfriend in 6 months was speaking fluently !!!

I guess you are not the romantic a girl would like to visit Paris with ; )

This is a site for expats. With no disrespect, why are either of you Siwss nationals on here complaining about what expats have to say, and the policies of Glocals about language, and the whole 'right to express your opinion' policy? Why are you on here at all?

Sorry if you think every expat should kowtow to Switzerland, but discussing the weird and unique aspects of a country is one way for new residents to get  used to a place, to meet like minded people, and become aquainted with this country. And having two Swissers charge in and nastily inform us to 'like us or leave' is probably not the way to get expats to want to know any more Swiss people.

And congrats to your boyfriend for his French skills. I expect when you visit America you will clean up your English witing skills, hm?

I don't build planes, I love Mumbai that is true. I understand that for you we (expat) come here for the wage that is soooo rewarding. If it makes you happy to believe that, be my guest.

Preferably you should accept the criticism that expat makes about your country, and recognise there are indeed things in the lovely Switzerland that I am afraid could be debated at many levels especially the ethical one.

If you want to talk about Italy, please do, post something in the forum and let's debate.

And to the person arguing that I could be one of those unsatisfied people, criticising everything, and being negative just for the sake of it. I respond.

It is too easy to get buy with a smile on your face and pretend that everying is jolly good around you, one should be able to say...well, there are things that are upsetting, badly managed, ...it is like when you are greeted by people you do not know. I have started to notice that in some cases they don't really do it because they mean it, but more to check that you reply to them, and if you don't...well, you may end up to be called sauvage

Basel is an amazing city full of cultural activities,, museums, parks, streetlife... I wouldn't call switzerland boring... especially Basel being so fun!

God I wish I had not joined this forum now, it is too boring and heavily dominated by some very passionate individuals.

I think the key thing for all to remember is that Switzerland is like any other country, it has its good areas, bad areas and areas that are suited to individual tastes.

Personally I hope this thread dies quickly so that my inbox stops getting filled up so quickly.

well, well...after all the original question remained mostly unanswered, but hey! it is good to see that we are in a democracy after all. Everyone respects other opinions, and we even got German fellows raising the swiss flag wow! I call that solidariety would you blame it? of course not.

As italian, of course I have to accept the fact we are mostly on a low income, and so be it. That is the way it goes, someone look for fortune, someone else provide fortune.

Back to Geneva. I have a question.

Why on earth when you ask people why they like Geneva, most of the time they say they like it for all the things the town is surrounded, and not for what the town has to offer?

In my opionion Switzerland is boring especially when talking about night life. Everything seems to be done for old people or children. Young people without children and not really into sports have not so much to do here.

You can lose all your points for any one of three things. One: If you cry. Two: If you ask to see your mother. Three: If you're hungry and ask for a snack! Forget it!

Geneva's in a valley. If one looks up from a valley one can only see mountains. One day, when you walk up the mountains, you'll see Geneva...but you won't see yourself in it, because you're on some boring mountain. Don't blame me...I didn't send you up there.

We have a way to get around real boredom in India. We sit on mountains, do nothing & let ants, cobras & birds immigrate onto our own body parts. We then call it "meditation," package it and sell it to unsuspecting tourists. So in truth you get truly bored, but you pay for it and can only complain to yourself. Radical, undemocratic, def. not cheap, but very effective.

I have been in Switzerland for the last 7 years (after living in New York and London) and I must admit (except for the first 3 months) I have enjoyed every single moment.

People from ALL over come here and criticize about the Swiss and Switzerland...Why did you leave your home town in the first place?

Its simple, you like it or your dont like it...
If you do like it, then there is no problem, if you dont just pack your bags and got to a place where you will not be frustrated and bored.

I like in Zurich so will not talk about other cities in Switzerland..

Look around...
You have a lake in the middle of the city.. Not many cities have that (except the swiss cities)

You have the mountains one hour away. You can go hiking in Summer and Skiing in Winter.
The nightlife is great!!
Lost of festivals throughout the year.
The quality of life is TOP CLASS.
The city/country is safe, clean.
The system works.
Its got an excellent social system.

Of course some people will say its expensive to live here..
True, but also look at the amount of money you make here..and dont forget the low taxes...
At the end of the day/week/month/year... you save MORE!!!

The list is endless...But what I would like to say is...

NO COUNTRY IS PERFECT... BUT WE MAKE SOME COMPROMISES HERE AND THERE... If you cant, then pack your bags!

@ ARIEL R - sharing my positive "drugs" :-) .... well, you do not know me at all, but the community in Zürich knows me well . I joined glocals in 2009 and from the beginn started organizing activities. In the last 3 years , I organized weekly numerous variety of activities here : from hiking, to many cultural events, dinners, concerts, dance workshops and so no; and I keep on doing it. I like that, cause also as a travel consultant, I am used to organizing and exploring . For me is a pleasure to do it. As an expact, I managed to integrate myself in Switzerland quite well and sometimes I am even better informed about life here than the local people themselves. As a volunteer, my decision was to share all that experiences and activities with the glocals members. Do you still think, I should share my "drugs" :-)))) ???? - if this is not enough for you, come along to Zürich and join us, cause people always come with pleasure, have fun and appreciate it. Many expats here often tell me, that due to me, they opened their eyes for many things in Switzerland and discovered a lot. The drugs are in your mind - the way you are, the way you confront life, the way you are part of it and the way you know how to enjoy it to the maximum. This is my receipt and I am very satisfied with what I do out of my life. It is up to each person to be flexible and integrate to the environment, in order to be able also to enjoy it. The environment is not oblidget to addapt to you as an individual. If you are not happy on one place, it means you should do your best to understand and love it or better leave it - otherwise you will be permenantly a victim of your own frustrations. I have been travelling all around the world due to my job but also for holidays, have visited over 200 places in all continents and I like all of them as each place is unique for itself. I can say that, no matter where you land, it depends on you and your willingness to feel comfortable and not bored. We are all so different and have different interests and prefferences. But if something doesn`t correspond your personal taste, it doesn`t mean at all that is should be classified as boring :-) ...

I am not swiss but I feel for the swiss who have to endure having some stupid obnoxious foreigner that thinks he/she is entitled to everything because he has a university diploma whining and moaning because things are not the way they want them to be.... they come here for the paycheck, that's all they care about and then don't even bother adapting to the local culture, learning the language and still bitch because the world does not rotate around their heads.

Because of my ex-work I had to be an expat often and there was always that expat that no matter where he/she was... he/she would always find something to moan about.

I remember when I used to work in Berlin and this girl would whine and complain about how much she hated Berlin and Germany because people were not friendly, she couldn't find a date, no one spoke english (she never bothered to learn basic german eventhough it was offered for free), Basically Berlin was the worst place on this planet!

Later I found her again Brussels Belgium and the story was the same, Beglum sucks, people here suck, brussels is boring, Brussels is too slow, I cant find a date, no one speaks english, there is nothing to do in a city with over 2 million people.

she got an assigment in Tokyo and she absolutely hated it because she couldn't understand anything, it was boring, too fast, too crowded and so on.

We would organize parties, BBQ, etc..... we invited her over to a party and she said she was too tired to go, then to a BBQ and she said she rather stayed home and watch TV, we took a tour of the belgian coast and she didn't go because she was sure to get bored as she didnt like the coast.... they had a beer tour and she didn't go because she didn;'t like beer...

I imagine if she was here, she probably would say that Geneva sucks, is boring blah blah blah.

why is a problem for you to accept someone saying that a place sucks. Some peolpe moan, some other do not. I like to listem to the one moaning, because sometimes they have someting interesting to say,....and we all moan at some point or another, don't you?

I can say a gazillion things about your country that are negative too..... and that are far from perfect..... starting from the terrible infraestructure, to the horrendous bureaucracy, to the political system that at times is more like a circus or a soap opera and so on.

yet you wouldn't find me making those types of comments because I'll be too busy trying to find the beauty of the place and enjoying it!

I ain't following the thread more so far but i read a few posts... here is my opinion

When i moved here (Zurich) back in 2009, first 3-4 months were extremely frustrating and boring. Main reason was, I have lived so far at places where you can easily find friends, easily make friends with people in your own office who are ready to do things together on weekends. It was a stark difference for me because people have their "own" plans for weekend and if you dont keep a planner yourself, you feel really left out. Secondly, as Indians our world revolves mainly around our family. We are not used to thinking only for ourselves and that was another difference for me which made me very lonely here.

Being at the dream place, I was extremely bored. But soon I understood rules of the game. If you want to talk to a Swiss in Zh, better learn German, if not Swiss-German. Is it his fault that he doesnt need to know English? :-) You are in his country, learn his language. I wont say he is friendly or someone who will immediately invite you home or make 10 plans with you to go out. At least he will talk to you in friendly way. 

Make your own plans, make your own arrangements and dont think that we will do things together. Once you are on your own and know what you like to do apart from thinking that I like to be with friends, everything gets going easily. Platforms like Glocals and Meetup work great for a newcomer. You dont like swiss person... f*** it man! There are so many expats. I am still working on my German but meantime i have dozens of expat friends.

A country full of mountains, lakes, pubs and festivals one after another... 40 hrs working to put cherry on top! If you still think it's boring... boy, u need to work on yourself first. 

switzerland is not boring... swiss people may not be that easy to be friends.. but who gives a f***. We have expats here to chill with. I am loving every moment here and touchwood, dont wanna leave this place.

I guess all us Indians are pretty happy being in places that they show us in Bollywood dream sequences that a billion others want to visit and/or live.

It's a different thing they showed us shots of Kashmir in the 80s and we alongwith the support of our like-minded peace-loving neigbours, went and screwed it all up for everyone. Hope this doesn't end thread up in the peaceful political forums...

I have lived in places where everything you could apparently ever need is at your doorstep 24 hours and i found my time there being used in a futile fashion..

days by the lake, encourgaed social time with friends and family, i.e. supermarkets etc being closed) are selling points to me..

to me, boring people have to entertain themselves at all time and cant sit back and ponder the finer things in life..

it is not for the government to introduce a new form of social reaction for those who have been ruined by "24  hour consumerism and redundant activities merely to pass the time"  ... life is what you make it...

No disrespect Ariel but your assessment of Glocals is incorrect. If you click on About Glocals (very bottom left hand corner) the first line says "glocals.com is a community of friendly expats & international minded locals, and we're about doing Real Activities with Real People."

If memory serves..and I admit it can be foggy    when the name changed from Geneva Online to Glocals, it was argued the name represented what the founders felt and hoped it would evolve to…that of the global population AND locals i.e. Swiss coming together.

I have no idea what percentage of members are Swiss but if I were a “true” local, I might think twice about joining a group who so desperately wished they were anywhere else than here.

The negative attitudes displayed in this thread could also be viewed as not the best way to get locals to want to know any more expats.

3) There exist boring people who find the time to come to this thread on the weekend of Fete de la musique (incl. me, since I'm posting this one)
4) While this thread could have been a great place to promote events, that may have been a little too interesting. Such events require some of us boring folks to come balance it out. So, no one provided real solutions to some wailing-expats who want to click-n-download one-size-fits-all 'fun' NOW 

Here's a dumb-dub event in Geneve: http://lezoo.ch/agenda-detail-784.html where online tickets are sold out. I MAY head there in a Bob-Marley T-shirt (boring & legal, I know) to bore my skull out, but have no tickets. If any of you folks are there, let's all get bored together.

Yet, I don't want to get there early because it may get too interesting to queue-up under the warm rain for tickets. If someone claims to be more bored than I, I'm willing to offer help. Please get there at 9pm (gates open @ 11pm) and pick two tickets up for me. I'd really appreciate...following the very boring, headstrong I'll-pay-you-for-them Swiss tradition.

  it seems, most of you read and pick-up only the negative nonsence comments here .... You say none offered any activity participatipation as a solution to the boreness of the community :-)))) ... It means you missed my comment from yestarday... Just read it again, come along to Zürich and join us, cause we have really fun and enjoy what we get here. But life is everywhere and not only in Zürich actually . I am sure in Geneva, you have also big choice; it is another question if you are too passiv to participate life and preffer just to be frustrated and be a permenant victim of your own unsatisfaction :-) - the choice is yours . Even animals and plants are bestly able to adjust to the envirinment and feel comfortable... thiose who do not manage it, they move to another place or just die ..... Human beings come out not to be really so evolutionary and flexible in that point of view ;-))))  .... Only the boring individs are bored, cause they have not the skills and the talent to make something amazing of the small things they are given ... The Boreness is in a kind of " Solar EClipse " of your own Glasses and your own Mind :-) ..... Today 18 June are in Zürich again numerous events: Zürich Arts Festival with many free concerts like jazz, pop, opera, theater, movies, design etc., The Gay Parade, The Summernightball and much more ... if you still complain about being bored, then you seem to be a unhealable emergency case ;-))) ... Enjoy life and make the best out of it !

@ ARIEL R - sharing my positive "drugs" :-) .... well, you do not know me at all, but the community in Zürich knows me well . I joined glocals in 2009 and from the beginn started organizing activities. In the last 3 years , I organized weekly numerous variety of activities here : from hiking, to many cultural events, dinners, concerts, dance workshops and so no; and I keep on doing it. I like that, cause also as a travel consultant, I am used to organizing and exploring . For me is a pleasure to do it. As an expact, I managed to integrate myself in Switzerland quite well and sometimes I am even better informed about life here than the local people themselves. As a volunteer, my decision was to share all that experiences and activities with the glocals members. Do you still think, I should share my "drugs" :-)))) ???? - if this is not enough for you, come along to Zürich and join us, cause people always come with pleasure, have fun and appreciate it. Many expats here often tell me, that due to me, they opened their eyes for many things in Switzerland and discovered a lot. The drugs are in your mind - the way you are, the way you confront life, the way you are part of it and the way you know how to enjoy it to the maximum. This is my receipt and I am very satisfied with what I do out of my life. It is up to each person to be flexible and integrate to the environment, in order to be able also to enjoy it. The environment is not oblidget to addapt to you as an individual. If you are not happy on one place, it means you should do your best to understand and love it or better leave it - otherwise you will be permenantly a victim of your own frustrations. I have been travelling all around the world due to my job but also for holidays, have visited over 200 places in all continents and I like all of them as each place is unique for itself. I can say that, no matter where you land, it depends on you and your willingness to feel comfortable and not bored. We are all so different and have different interests and prefferences. But if something doesn`t correspond your personal taste, it doesn`t mean at all that is should be classified as boring :-) ...
