Hello!
I will be moving to Geneva from Canada to complete an internship at an NGO. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the commute from Lausanne to Geneva is like? Has anyone done this before? I was thinking of living with my partner in Lausanne, and commuting into Geneva, but I am worried that the commute will be too long, and that it may be nice to just find a place in Geneva....Any suggestions/comments???
Thanks!

First, welcome to Switzerland and good luck with your internship!! As far as commuting goes be warned that the autoroute from Lausanne to Geneva is basically a parking lot during the morning and evening hours so you are better off buying a yearly rail pass and taking the train if you're sure you want to live in Lausanne. That said, finding flats in Geneva (and affordable ones at that!) is almost mission impossible so you would probably have more luck in living in Lausanne...plus, I hear LOL is as active as the GOL side of Glocals thanks to JulianT and Jasper...Whatever you decide, enjoy!

Thank you everyone for your advice. I think I will likely go to Switzerland a little bit early and see what the commute is like...If it is really bad, I can always try and find a place to live in Geneva (or at least try!).

I suggest you to live in Lausanne!
Try to find a house near the Metro M2 (if you are coming after september 2008) or in the center or sous-gare districts. In this way you'll be less than 10 minutes from the stations. There are 5 trains per hour from Lausanne to Geneve, and trips takes from 35 to 50 minutes. trains run from 5AM to 12AM (1AM on friday and saturday)...
...sometimes Lausanne is closer to the center of Geneva than some parts of Geneva itself!

Hi, I've been commuting for the last 2 years, because my work is in Geneva and the one of my girlfriend is in Lausanne (and of course we live in Lausanne). I have no choice, so I am not complaining too much, but I really regret the time where we were both living in Geneva! The long commuting (1 hour for me) really diminishes the overall quality of life. Now, if you can get a nice flat within walking distance (less than 10min) from the Lausanne station (and if your work is close to Geneva station), the situation is less problematic. However, flats around the Lausanne station are overall very expensive, so the benefit from living in Lausanne quite diminishes. The car is another option if you avoid peak hours, but is much more expensive due to fuel price and parking price. Good luck

hmmm....so many different opinions! I have heard the commute can be pretty bad...and coudld take up to 1 1/2 hours some days. But I guess it would be nice to live in Lausanne too. I will have to give this some more thought. Thank you again for your responses.

I'm not so sure where NTO is...or what it is...I live in Lausanne and commute to Geneva. My opinion on the matter is, Lausanne is a very nice place to live, but concerning the commute it depends on where your destination in Geneva is. I commute to Meyrin and it takes me 1.5 hrs to and from, so 3 hrs a day....approximately 35 minutes are spent waiting at Cornavin (the cetnral train station) for my connecting trains.
To make a long story short(er), I probably will be looking to move to Geneva, because the 3 hrs a day that I loose (well lets say the 2 hrs a day, becasue there will always be some travel time to work) could be spent "having a life", which isn't the case right now.
I would encourage you to live in Lausanne if you could 1. live close to the Lausanne train station and 2. if the place you are working/interning is close to Cornavin. At any rate expect over 50 mintues to and from at least each day (in the best case scenerio).
Lausanne is a beautiful city, close to all the great winter sports activities, is supposed to have a more happening nightlife than Geneva these days (although I can't really compare). Despite being on a hill, everything is within walking distance, which makes it a very convenient place to live, if you ask me.
