Living hand to mouth in Geneva?

Hi All!  I'll be arriving in Geneva later this month and looking to connect with others looking for fun on a restricted budget.  Anyone know of inexpensive bars or perhaps an underground music scene?  Could it be possible that either exist in Geneva?  Also, if anyone has an empty room I'm looking for a place to stay at a reasonable cost until early September.  See you soon Geneva!

Welcome! The underground scene exists but it is mostly French speaking. Places to check out: Grottes & Jonction. Lots of bars, no websites of course as they're bare bones in Grottes. 2 DL wine is CHF3 and beer is CHF2! Cheaper than that you won't get it. Also check out http://www.usine.ch/

Cool, it'll be fun to check out french music and great to hear its possible to find some reasonably priced drinks.  Any tips on the least expensive places to find housing?  You think living in Ferney-Voltaire in nearby France would save much money compared to Geneva?  Any thoughts on housing websites for Ferney-Voltaire?  Thanks for all the help!

Hi,

French is actually not a disease but still the local language in Geneva ;) and learnable!

Geneva has a great underground scene which is particularly active in the summer…unfortunately the Glocals and the "local" scene don't meet very often and are not really aware of each other's existence. You are welcome to contact me for more when you are in Geneva.

So, in addition to offering information privately, which is very kind of you, why not post it on this site so that glocals can integrate into the "local" scene?

Oh, I didn't mean to hide…just that there are many things happening and I probably won't be able to give a full overview…

Lots of events are announced on the following site:                     http://www.darksite.ch/ladecadanse/

Some cool places/associations to mention:                                                 L'Usine: http://www.usine.ch/                                                                          UECA:http://www.ueca.ch/                                                                                  Cave12: http://www.cave12.org/index.php                                                      La Barje: http://www.labarje.ch/drupal/                                                            Le Bateau: http://www.bateaugeneve.ch/                                                       Le Cabinet: http://lecabinet.ch/                                                             CineTransat (open air cinema in the summer): http://www.tako.ch/programmation-2010/

 …

And coolest parties are always in the course of festivals…and there are many of them:

Mapping Festival (starting today): http://www.mappingfestival.ch/2010/  Overground festival in August : http://www.overgroundfestival.ch/                  Black movie festival in February: http://www.blackmovie.ch                        AMR aux Cropettes in June…

Just give you some examples…

Some of the festivals and associations also welcome volunteers…this is certainly a good way to integrate with locals and to learn French…

I hope this helps!

Hi all,

Kaire – thanks for positing the info on music in the area, looks great and I can’t wait to check it out soon!

Halshka – glad I’m not the only one looking for fun on the cheap!  Also, I found a two bedroom apartment in Rue Du Candolle, Geneva that charges $500 per person / per month so I’m looking for someone to share the apartment with over the summer.  Please let me know if you need a place or if you know someone looking for a place please send them my way.

Hope everyone’s doing great!

Best,

Andy

Andy, I am sure you are going to love Geneva - your timing is perfect. During the summer there are lots of free and fun things going on including:

500 is extremely cheap and sounds to good to be true. Maybe you should share the add with someone. I have seen a lot low priced awesome appartments on websites, which normally cost 4k+.  For a 30m2 appartment the price often is already above a $1000,-. Don't pay a deposit in advance before you have seen the appartment (from the inside) and maybe bring someone experienced.

Surprised to see that so many people are interested…well, I really recommend the Mapping Festival that started yesterday: http://www.mappingfestival.ch/2010/ Great things for those who are into audiovisual art and electronic music or into local community ;)…

One of the events to point out is certainly the audiovisual performance with electronic + organ music  by Anti VJ taking place tonight and tomorrow in the St- Gervais church…you probably don't want to miss it if you see this:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x70bvw_antivj-crea-composite-nuit-blanche_creation

Followed by events at Spoutnik and Zoo…

So much for Geneva's ("cheap") "Underground" world if we can say that…

Andy,

I agree with whoever said that 500 is questionably cheap...there are a TON of scams out there for Geneva apartment listings so definitely be a bit cautious. If you can, try to reserve without paying too much in advance. 2 of my friends got scammed a few months ago...

I think I am going to try to book a place in a youth residence hall if I dont find a place soon, but Ill keep you posted!

Hey lailasthings!  I was wondering if you could recommend any bars in particular in the Grottes or Jonction area for the 2 CHF beers.  I've been here for two weeks and definitly in need of a bare bones place with cheap beers like that!  Best! Andy

Hi everybody

I will be arriving to Geneva in 10 days and I am also on a low budget, so as many of you I am very interested on those cheap places too.

And also I´m open to sharing those beers and meeting new people.

Hi Tee T,

I am also interning at the WHO and was wondering if the housing you found was a sublet or a residence hall?  I arrive mid-July and have housing for July and August, but need housing for Sept. and October, perhaps I could rent the space after you leave?

Hope to hear from you soon!
