New in Geneva - Finding an apartment

Hi everyone!

I Nina, 25 years old, from Germany and I am going to move to Geneva due to an internship by the beginning of March and will stay for 3 months. I still need to find an apartment and I appreciate every single tip about rooms to rent, good neighboorhoods, websites where to find apartments...

And of course I am also greatful for any other tips I should consider when moving to Geneva! :)

Thanks in advance and have a nice weekend everybody!

Nina

Parker: you're such a nice helpful guy, I'm sure you're a hit with the ladies.

Nina: you probably heard the real-estate market in Geneva sucks, as there's very little supply. Here's the main tips that helped me when I arrived:

1. Be ready to compromise.
If you look for the perfect place at the perfect price, you won't find it...

2. When you see something you semi-like, apply for it quickly.
Don't wait too long, cos available places here go fast.

3. If you're here for just 3 months then look for a sublet, because renting from the owners or building managers (called Regies) is usually for long term.

4. For sublets in Geneva look at the glocals clasiffieds section cos there is lots of stuff there that's not on the rest of the market. Other sites:

- immostreet.ch

- homegate.ch

- immoscout.ch

Good luck on the move!

Since you're staying just 3 months, housesharing could be a solution.  Here's a site about housesharing in Switzerland (note: I never tried it, just happen to have heard about it).

Hi Nina,

I am actually trying to rent my flat for a period of 6 months and in fact didn't think about the possibility of renting for sharing, But could be a good idea. I have a for pieces appartment, two bedrooms fully equipped dishwasher, kitchen, fridge, washing machine. It is located in Versoix, 15 minutes by train from downtown Geneva, the train station is really close, two minutes walk, there is also a bus that goes to Geneva. By car it takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on the traffic. Please let me know if you would be interested

Regards

Veronica

Oh, please, it’s German-speaking Switzerland, not Swiss Germany.

Thanks for taking good note,

R.

Surely under the same logic to be totally correct it would be Swiss German speaking Switzerland

I must have too much time on my hands today! Tongue Out

Hi Verónica,

I am Valeria Solis and I saw this reply. I am also looking for a place to stay for a 3 month course at GCSP 08 april to 03 july.

Do you speak Spanish?, I am from Mexico -a diplomat from Mexico, - who has been sent for this course.

I will be staying in this appartment together with my husband. I would also not mind sharing it with Nina.

Regards,

Valeria

The language is Swiss German, i.e., it is a Swiss variant of the German language.

The people are German (or German-speaking) Swiss, i.e., they are Swiss nationals whose native tongue is  German.

No one ever calls the French speakers “Swiss French” because they, too, are Swiss nationals but their  mother-tongue is French.

Best, R.
