New to Geneva and in need of some advice

Hi All,

My husband and I are new to Geneva. We went to a couple of glocals events this weekend which was great to meet people.

We have a few questions related to living in Geneva:

1) We are currently looking for an apartment and have noticed that they ask about civil liability insurance. Is this a prerequisite when renting and who would you recommend.

2) We also know that we need to get health insurance and understand that there is a basic insurance that is compulsary and additional insurances that can be selected. Who would you recommend? We are currently on Bupa International, does this cover anything here or change any of the options we should consider.

Is there any other insurance or things we should be getting or doing?

Many thanks in advance and we look forward to meeting you at a future glocals event.

Regards, Michelle

Welcome to Geneva... you've landed at the right website!

I use La Mobilière on Rue de la Cité1  022  819 05 55 for my basic liability insurance. Yes, you must obtain it.  You can get more information on all insurance questions at www.comparis.ch in English.  Check comparis's website to see whether Bupa is on the list of insurers here.

In renting your apartment it is essential to do a very, very thorogh walk-through and mark down every single thing you note that needs fixing and every little scratch on anything in the apartment and any issues with appliances on the form that is provided.

Within one month, join ASLOCA, the renters' association and meet with them within that first month to see whether you may be entitled to a rent reduction. (This is something you do not necessarily need to tell the rental agency you a intend to do...)

Good luck and welcome to the City of Calvin...

Hey Michelle,

Welcome to Genava!

Check out this glocals Guide to Insurance in Geneva for the basics. glocals also has this deal with Allianz Insurance - one of the biggest local insurers - where we get 20% off all insurances (except basic health insurance). Allianz ain't the cheapest around, but they're among the top (in my personal experience) when it comes to paying claims and giving good service.
