New to Geneva and looking for an apartment
Hello!

I am a Canadian girl currently living in bella Roma (working for UN WFP) and will be moving to Geneva March 02nd for a new job.  I am looking for an apartment and would prefer to have roomates.  Am also looking to meet new people and the ex-pat community, which I hear is great.

Would love to hear from you. [email protected]

Thanks,

Helena

Hi Helena,

Welcome (soon...) to Geneva. glocals actually did a fund raising Beach-Party for the World Food Program last year, and raised CHF 16,000 for your cause. And it was a blast!

Anyway, for the questions you asked:

Meeting people:
the best way I know is to check the 'Member Activities' section on glocals, and join an activity you like. Or, post an activity of your own, in your area of interest. People are usually very welcoming during these activities.

Finding apartments:
A less easy one...as you probably know, the local real estate market currently has strong demand, and very little supply...but here's the bit of advice I can share:
- check out the 'Market > Housing' section on glocals. Sometimes there's stuff there that's not on the market yet.
- check out www.immostreet.ch and www.homegate.ch . These are 2 sites (there's more) that collect local 'for rent' ads and present them for free.
- Ensure you have a place to stay in the first few months. It may take that long to find a place...

Pls let me know if there's more info needed, and if I can help. We've all been 'new to geneva' at some point, and know the feeling...:)

Nir

Hi Helena,

I just read you add...Good luck with your new life in Geneva.

Regarding the apartment search....you can also try www.comparis.ch

I was looking for an apartment in Lausanne a few months ago, and that's how I found mine.

It's a good website, not only for apartment actually, but also for insurances, internet connection, etc. Check it out !

Florence.

Hi Helena

I am a Swiss who moved from the UK to Ge. It is quite difficult to find a place to stay, I went through this and now after 6 months I will hopefully sign a contract tomorrow for a flat (they call it "bail" here). First of all make sure you have at least a hotel where you can stay when you arrive.

Other than the sites mentioned you should put an advert in one of the most read papers here

www.ghi.ch.

Explain what you are looking for and you might be lucky and someone will ring you up. Englich in an advert is ok , too. Prices are horrible and don't think you'll get something nice to start with. Take whatever you can, I am not joking.

Ask your employer to help you, They might have some flats leftover from earlier coworkers.

If you speak some french then you can search

www.tdg.ch

as well, another local paper. And

www. immodiffusion.ch

www.immobilier-geneve.ch.

The probably most time consuming thing to do, but probably most efficient is to call all the agencies (called "regies") they will tell you all the flats which are not advertised yet. Make sure you can see them before being advertised and say yes. Roommates will be easy to find.

Well, good luck.

Enjoy Geneva, it's a nice place.

Hi Andrej

I am moving to Geneva soon too, did you have luck with your "bail".

I have seen that immodiffusion is a payment site, would you recommend to subscribe and pay the 150 chf? does it really help?

Thanks
